YET Another arrival at the Water Closet of Steam!5/17!I am flushed with excitement as I am getting some additions to the collection this and next month. I had a small windfall, plus I have been selling items right and left, the only steam item sold so far was my SR1A
Well they have started arriving
I got some Accessories that came with an engine
The Accessories
I know that several members have these same accessories and much to my surprise this set had some of the pieces stamped!
On the right I have marked the Logo with black to make it stand out better.
IF you know what it is let us know, it does say Made In Germany US Zone
and what did they arrive with?
Another Fleischmann 122/4
Sitka the Steam Cat is inspecting the packaging to make for sure there wasnt anything I forgot to unpack.
There are a few things with this engine that need my attention, but I think I will have it both cleaned up nice and proper, and in proper working order in the next day or so.
I really like these engines, but since I am buying several other things, I think I might have to sell it once I get it all sorted out.

Nice, those accesories look great

I do not have any better photos, but the engine cleaned up real nicely, it required a bit of tinkering and now to use an expression so popular here, it runs like the clappers. I was wanting to sell it to help pay for upcoming purchases, but I am so impressed with how well it runs that I just might keep it, nothing wrong with having a matching pair is there?
What do you think? Keep it or sell it, two is nice.
|
IndianaRog
|
John, I would have a hard time parting with that Fleischmann...it did clean up nicely and as you said...runs like the clappers. I vote to keep them as a matched pair!
As for your accessories, I wonder if that W on top of a W is in fact a the letter "B" turned in sync with a "W"...standing for Bing Werks?? One of the several names Gerbruder Bing used during the many years they made toy engines. Not sure, but I bet it is.
Nice to see you laying in a few pieces of late!

Atleast you know when it was made as the US zone only last for a short time after the end of WWII. Mirko will probably know more

It is in the shape my other was this morning, using two parts from it, my other one would be very difficult to tell from fairly new. My first Fleischmann 122/4 now qualifies for MIB. This one sure qualifies for Very good condition. There were a few problems with this one, it had been disassembles at some time and not put back together right. Since I had one to look at, I quickly saw the problem. The eccentric was not put on properly and the valve was thus rendered non-functional. It was an easy fix.
The seller said it was missing the burner, but it was jambed up inside the Firebox. and it even had some spare gaskets which I decided to use instead of making some from Teflon. These are the leather like gaskets, they seem to be real good gaskets.
From all that I can tell the engine is a 1954 version like my other. That was a good year, as I am 1954 vintage too

Great additions. I don't think the tools can be Bing. Bing ceased to trade in 1932 and these pieces are dated somewhere between 1946 and and 1951.

Great buys John. Also good to see the tools have a marking on them.
I can't find my small Shire book steam toy accessories to see if the marking is in there. But will check it out.
As for the engine, that's a tough one If you need the money for future purchases I'd sell the MIB one as runners are always better to keep

So, are you officially a Fleischmann collector yet?
Every now and then I take a kick at one of the larger ones on ebay, but they always go for about double what I'd like to pay

Good looking engine, some nice tools to go with it and a hint at a makers mark. What more could you want.
Well done John on a very good purchase.
|
johnreid
|
The 122/4 is just a little bigger than a Jensen 25.
|
johnreid
|
More of the Fleischmann 122/4, I cleaned it up and made all of the repairs needed. Here it is in better photos
and showing the door from the back of the Firebox, I do believe it is repairable, and might attempt it myself, still unsure, but all of the pieces are there and really just a minor thing that is wrong as the latch has become disassembled but still complete.
And, the pair
There is a small amount of rust on two of the feet on the base of the one I just got, but I do not think it is bad enough to merit any paint touch up even, very minor for a 50+ year old engine.

IndianaRog
|
John, I have a warm spot for those Fleischmanns in that my first engine was a very similar model. The latest one really cleaned up nicely and they make a great pair side by side.

Youve done a really good job on that John, as wallace suggested before, sell that one on , and keep the other for a runner.
Cheers

It is a hard decision, the one I just got is from about 1960 from what I can tell, paint color etc.
The problem is, my collection is small, and I do have the idea that Quality, not Quantity is my goal. I intend to run all of my engines, but care for them too.
I suspect that I should be able to get what I spent on this engine and keep the Accessories. However I still like the idea of having the pair.
I am of limited funds, but for a very short time I am able to get by without suffering so for now I think I am going to keep it and it will be one that can be moved when there is either a need for cash or if something that I want more comes along. I think this is as good as keeping the money in a passbook savings account.
I will take better pictures of the accessories the next day it isnt raining. and I do have some real nice additions to arrive within the next month, maybe even one tomorrow or Monday.

My Mamod SE3 arrived today! I fired it using Esbit then proceeded to clean and polish. The SE3 is bigger than I expected and runs like there is no tomorrow. I am quite pleased. I have a Meths burner coming in a month or less as it has to make the trip across the pond.
And of course, the Mamod trifecta!
The SE3 was the last on my short list of MUST HAVES, so from here on out it will be bargains or real interesting engines that I happen to get.
I do have two more engines that will be added soon as they are paid for, one is in the mails and another is still being built and soon to be mailed.
It was nice getting an engine on my Birthday.
Now excuse me while I fire it up one more time before I prepare my evening meal.

Congrats John, you landed a beauty there for sure. Nice to see the Trifecta!!!
AND...the sun came out finally in honor of your birthday!!!
|

Not to mention the SE3 came with a real nice original Box, yes I have another box to store, but it is nice to have a boxed engine.
I cant wait for my Titanic Pop Pop ( any day now ) , my Bowman ( posted and on ot s way from the UK ) , and a little engine from the UK ( either still being assembled or in transit, dont know which ) , all of which should be arriving in the next month or less.

Everything seems to be in excellent condition & yet more on the way

Nice John. Very nice.
Is that the one that was going to be expensive post??
I assumed being solid fuel fired it could have a sightglass. It's a bonus that it hasn't.
Well done

Now, the accessories that came with the Fleischmann
Again, a plea for help, this is the marking on these accessories, if anyone has an ides as to the maker, let us know.

Yes it is the one that could have been an expensive post. He ended up charging $15, not the cheapest but not outrageous.
I do not know if he packed it or had it packed, but the Engine was in the Original box, with all of the loose pieces bundled separate, that box was boxed and That box was boxed, sorry Roger, but someone actually outpacked you!
This had to be the best packaged engine I ever saw. He left me good feedback, and I left him good too, but sent him an email explaining that it would be a lot easier next time if he determines the shipping before he lists something.
I am very happy with this one, it is, as James would put it, Girthy.

Seconded.
Very clean looking piece. Beautiful.
You have sun in Indiana
Unfortunately, just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water..... I have just learned that Phil is making the beam engine again.

Nooooooo, I just ordered the Jenny Wren. I bet the beam will cost more, right?
I think that the Jenny wren is great for the "Hey look at the tiny Engine" thrill.
I plan on finding a piece of hardwood and a piece of brass, then fasten the brass to the hardwood and use that instead of Marble or Granite. However I bet it will be the end of June before the Postal carrier delivers the Jenny Wren.

John, it might come faster than you think...I won my Lilliput from Phil via eBay and had the engine in hand in under a week. He sent mine very well packed inside a plastic jar suspended in peanuts in a box...it could have survived a 3 story drop.
Hey, I got a box earlier this week that was packed better than I do!
I believe it was done by a UPS store, engine well wrapped in bubble wrap, inside a large box full of noodles inside an even larger box with noodles supporting the inner box. I suggested all that to the seller and even offered to pay more than his $20 shipping charge, but he wouldn't take more and really outdid himself.
I kept that box and noodles in case I ever need a nuclear proof package!!!

Mine took nearly five weeks from when he shipped it. But this is the Caribbean, Rog's estimate is probably more accurate for you. Having won it on E Bay, however, his was probably already assembled.
I know he has quite a few orders in at the moment.
He's right about the packaging. I think Phil thought mine would be hit with an IED and packed accordingly.
I have been told that the beam engine is 200 pounds. Don't know if he might do a discount for long term forum members or previous customers.
Boy, it's a bitch paying for everything in Dollars these days.

It just doesnt stop, another arrival and my second Bowman!!!!!
Yellow Jr did a really good job of packing and it arrived very quickly. It was well oiled, but it was no problem wiping the oil off, Mr O would be proud of Yellow Jr
This one is a M158 and it is smaller than my M135. Yellow Jr was selling it with a wooden box, but I had decided that since it wasnt the original box that it would be foolish to ship the box so I asked him to keep it, however, I do have an original M158 box that will be here before too long, it is still in the UK.
So much for the talk, here are the pictures
The burner isnt original, but looks like it will be fully functional, maybe some day I will be able to either find an original burner or make a reasonable facsimile but till then I am more than satisfied with the one that came with this engine.
and now for the family photo, a picture that I never thought taht I would ever be able to take, My TWO Bowmans!
I do believe that I need to get an Ogee router bit and some Oak to make these display similarly. Needless to say, I am very excited about the new addition to the Water Closet of Steam

Mind you, it is hard to stop at just two Bowmans.

Well, two things drew my attention. First the Meths was melting the Red Paint on the Base, and I noticed that all M158s had green bases.
So, it was time to take care of that situation. I boiled the remainder of the Red Paint off of the base in Detergent water ( thanks Toxx ) and then repainted the base Green, I gave it three thin coats, and then I baked it this morning at 300°F for 2 hours. Then reassembled it. There was some solder work required to fix some leaks too. It is reassembled, but I do not plan o firing it till another 24 hours has passed on the Paint, although having been baked it should be fully cured ( better safe than sorry ) I have a new Decal coming and plan on giving it a Clear Coat once the decal is in place.
|
IndianaRog
|
Excellent paintwork John! I have found it is hard to get meths resistant paint here in the US, but I find polyurethane once cured is pretty resistant to it, so can be used as a final coat.
|
Les Marsh
|
That looks really good now John, well done.
|
johnreid

I fired it and still have leaks aplenty, but the paint seems to be holding up. I wonder if baking it didnt help some.

I thought you were going to wait until tomorrow??
|

I just cant help it.
I did some more torch work and it now runs like the Clappers! Great running machine in fact. Plus, I accidentally spilled some Meths on the new paint and it didnt even seem to affect it at all. I am Quite pleased now.

I had a decal that was stashed away for my M135, but have another on its way here so I decided to do the decal.
I cleaned the base and added one drop of dishwashing liquid to a bowl of water, the detergent is to break the surface tension of the water so it wont bead up, and soaked the decal.
I then used an artists brush to slide the decal off of its paper backing and onto the base. There are some minor tears and it went on a little crooked, but I decided that it was good enough for who it is for.
I then allowed it to thoroughly dry and then sprayed three coats of enamel clear coat over it, as I type the buzzer on the oven is going off, 2 hours at 300 degrees F.
I hope to take some pictures later. but it looks like a good glossy finish and hopefully the decal is somewhat protected.

Well.. I can tell ya this, if I needed to bake something, I would HAVE to use the BBQ. I would be kiled if I tried to bake a painted part in the oven. The family leaves me alone, but I also know where NOT to push it.

Nice job John.
I always finish a base off with a couple of coats of clear lacquer to protect the decal and the base paint.
That gives a really hard wearing finish that guards against decal damage during use.

This is an Enamel, I found that the color paint seems to hold up better if I baked it so I decided to bake this enamel, I really l;ike the gloss look it gives and am very hopeful it will hold up to the Meths. I am temporarily without a burner for this one as a swap is taking place and the mail is always way too slow. Especially when oceans have to be crossed.
I love the "Wet" look that the clear gloss gives it.

I also bake the base after the final clear lacquer has been applied and left for at least a week.
I used that formula for this resto. I think you'll agree, it gives a really deep finished shine as well as protecting the decal.

That's great John and the lacquer just gives it the finish it needs.
