Another newbie, from Sweden

Hi to all!
Actually I love sailing more than anything. (Almost anything...)
But as the water here in Sweden gets this hard crust in the winter (which slows the boat down considerably) I needed an extra hobby to tide me over the winters.
So there I was helping my neighbour/mate take a load of rubbish to the tip and in the middle of the pile I saw an old Wilesco D6.
Is it OK to say Wilesco on this forum? In my first submission??
"Yere not gunna chuck that out are ya?" I asked him.
He was so I grabbed it.
And it's gone on from there.
Now I have 11 Wilescos, 4 Mamods, 1 Ade, 1 John Ericsson, 1 unidentified and a really nice home-built model boat engine, gas fired with it's own butane tank.
Photos soon.
Anyway this morning I fetched a parcel from the post office.
It was a Mamod SP5 I bought on Ebay.
According to the description it was in good condition but when I unpacked it and fired it up I discovered a couple of faults.
The axle was slightly bent which prevented the engine from coming up in revs. I've fixed that.
The pressed-in threaded ferrule into which the whistle screws is loose which means I can't screw the whistle out. And it leaks a bit.
Anybody have any suggestions as to how I can fix this?
Is the timing between the two cylinders important?
I read somewhere that they should be set so that one is 90 degrees after the other. I tried that, then 180 degrees.
It didn't seem to make any difference. Maybe it's not important?
I guess that's enough for now, please excuse all my spelling and grammatical errors. Difficult language, English.
Regards,
Bugsy

Hi Bugsy and welcome to the forum.  PLEASE don't think you have bad English or grammar...it's perfectly good and better than many who have English as a first language.

Sounds like you are well on the way to a nice collection of several brands.  Most of us have pretty broad collections spanning different brands, but we all have a favorite.  Yours might be Wilesco, mine is Jensen (an American brand) and others focus on Mamod, accessories, boats and on and on it goes.  All are right if they are right for that person.

I do understand your ice encrusted conditions this time of year, we here in Indiana, USA are still digging out from a deep snowfall yesterday and quite low temps.  I too used to love sailing, had a Catalina 22 (22 foot long boat made in California)...loved it and had it for 14 years as my family grew up, but I was over an hour's drive just to get to an inland lake, so it got tiresome with time.  Sold it a few years ago and have focused on several other easier to handle hobbies including steam.

Again, welcome to the forum, it's a warm and friendly place where you will fit right in...pictures and videos are always welcome.

cheers,
Roger from Indiana, USA (about 4 hrs. drive south of Chicago)

Theoretically, if the cylinders are single acting then they should be 180 degrees apart and if they are double acting then they should be 90 deg apart. However, as you've discovered, it's not critical.

Hi Buggsy from a very wet Gloucestershire, UK.

Sounds like you have a good collection there already.
Look foreward to the pics. I love the SP5s, very poewerful engines.

Could you do a pic of the loose ferrule?

You may need to solder it in with a tiny bit of solder to stop it leaking, but a pic of the area may help.

I'll try and take a photo, don't think you'll see much as I can't get the whistle out. It just rotates.
Photo tomorrow, it's 2:08 am here. Bedtime...

Gees, I could really murder a meat pie right now.
And a schooner, Tooths, Tooheys or Reches would be great.

Note the non-standard chimney.
It is an SP5, isn't it?
This one does't seem to be as powerful as others on Youtube.
Probably worn?

The loose whistle bush is a common and annoying problem but is fixable.
WHat happens is the whistle isn't undone for some time and calcium scale builds up on it and 'glues' it to the bush and when someone tries to remove the whistle the soldering on the bush breaks.

To fix it yo will need to solder it.
Try the easy way first which is to clean up the boiler and the bush on the outside and soldering it in place.
If that doesn't work you need to take the end cap off and solder it from the inside.
To do this you need to remove the site glass so it doesn't melt and the desolder the end cap. Then clean up the bush from the inside and solder up.

To unstick the whistle try the heating and coiling method.
Use a blow torch to heat up the whistle and the bush and then when hot dunk it in cold water. Do this 4 or 5 times and it should come loose. It works as the heating and cooling expands the brass at a different rate to the calcification causing the calcification to crack and release the whistle.

Good luck with the fix.

A big and warm welcome from Germany. It's the most friendly and helpful forum I was ever in. Guys from all over the world with lovely tics, mainly from England and (former English colonies) from where steam engines came across the world and industrialisation starts...
But e.g Frederic the Great from Prussia had his spys in England and so steam engines came to the continent.

Great that toy steaming ties a band from NZ via AUS and US to England, France, Germany up to Sweden.

Emperor Karl V. (Carlos I.) of Spain (acc. to Frederic v. Schiller his son Philipp II.) had an "empire without sunset".

And we: We have the same, but without war, conquering, boundaries and so on....

Long live our steam empire!

Feel welcome from cold and icy norhtern Germany

cheers Joe
