I've always liked Shay's. All the gearing and angled drives makes it a very complex machine

very atmospheric. I do like the shays they have a charm all of their own It was only after some prolonged observation that I realised the boiler is offset (quite logically ) to counter balance the steam engine on the one side. A brilliant engine, I imagine they must have no problem with traction.

That was their purpose, they worked on tight conditions and climbed steep grades, I rode in one and it took a small train up a 13% grade, no problem. Fantastic engines, some were quite large too.
