Any barometer experts out there?Me dear old Mam wants to sell her barometer, it's a Royal Polytechnic Admiral Fitzroy by Joseph Davis of London c.1890. It stands just over 1m tall in an oak case and has the key. The only fault with it is one of the pawls on one of the adjuster slips.
Can anyone here throw some more light on this please?

Generally as objects those are down but it looks like genuine quicksilver columns on both and that means it has value despite the recession on barometers
Best prices are fetched at specialised technica auctions where the collectors gather.

Yep mate I'd looked at that :wink:It's identical but this one as a bit of history to it.

Very nice indeed. I had an Admiral Fitzroy with a clock somewhat like the one in the link below but with more complex carving. Unfortunately I had to let it go for a song (more like a lament -- reproductions go for hundreds of quid).
His name regularly appeared on barometers. He was captain of HMS Beagle, the ship that took Darwin on his famous voyage. He pretty well invented accurate weather forecasting, was the first head of the Meteorological Office and managed to fit in being Governor of New Zealand as well.

History is only good if it is undeniably verified.
Of course "Pete's Mom" should be history enough.

Here's a link to some Fitzroy reproductions (I see that they're having problems with mercury because of new EU regulations)

And staying that way, thank you very much.
(Unless Katy Holmes answers my email.)

That's a real beauty Pete! Would truly love a piece like that.
I'd certainly require local pickup only though, as that mercury column will not take well to typical postal handling, and can't be inverted, or even laid down near level!

That's the major problem, that and the price!

Pete, if you have a price in mind, then you may do okay putting it on eBay with your price as a reserve. That way you don't have to let it go for less than you want, and can still require local pick-up only. Perhaps it's a bit of long odds, but just maybe there will be an interested party within pick-up distance from you.
Best of luck with your sale!!!
