Are there any nails in it?I have a new standard question to ask about engines now.
'Are there any nails in the boiler?'
I received my Scorpion engine today and when I unpackaged it I noticed a load clunking noise coming from the boiler.
I thought 'Thats a big bit of solder or calcium inside the boiler'
I removed the safety valve and turned the engine upside down and shook it and rust dust came out, which confused me as there is no iron on the engine except the spring on the safety valve and this was large flakes.
After a bit more shaking to my surprise a 2 inch nail fell out of the safety valve hole. I shook it some more and it still rattled, after a few more seconds of shaking another nail fell out, but there was still stuff inside the boiler.
After another 5 minutes and a pair of tweezers I removed a third 2 inch nail from inside the boiler.
I think I will giving this boiler a good rinse before I run it.
I've taken some photos and will upload then after dinner.
The engine requires some work but is generally ok.
It has a small dent on the boiler top that would remove the end cap being removed to fix so will leave that.
Whistle was seized solid and seized into the engine.
I heated and quenched it free times and managed to remove the whistle but after 5 heating and quenching of the whistle it was still seized so its soaking in the pickle at the moment disolving the calcium. Excluding the polishing I should have and a new chimney I should have it running tonight.

Hey, this could be the "weird things you find in an engine" thread.
Probably the weirdest thing was a very dead wasp, right at the back of the false cylinder cover of my Bowman M135. Perefctly preserved in steam oil.
Another Bowman, this one boxed, came wrapped in what looked like some very tatty scrap of material. On closer examination it turned out to be a little girl's apron with a very nice floral print - a friend of mine who knows about these things says it's probably from the early 1900's. It's torn and ratty, but somehow I can't bear to throw it away.

Nails, now that's a new one.
Strangest thing I've found is 2 toothpicks in a boiler

The early SE2 with vapourizing burner that I got recently came with a little glass pyrex chemistry dish with a pouring lip. I suppose it was a substitute for the funnel,

Screws, pebbles, an intact sight glass tube and one fish hook. The boiler containing three human teeth did manage to catch me a bit off my guard, though... LOL.

The first engine I ever bought off Ebay arrived with the boiler more than half full of water.
It cost him a fortune in postage!

With UK water rates they are, you might as well take the water out and sell it on

I'm surprised it didn't dissolve! I washed out the Black 5's boiler at Pulborough, and 5 nails, one rivet head, and plenty of rusty water came out The only thing strange in my boilers are the remains of my M158 safety valve in the M158's boiler

it couldn't have been in there very long I don't think. It certainly made me snigger a bit though.
