Arthur even more wagonsI can't seem to stop bidding on wagons.
Here is Arther pulling:
1 x coal wagon with coal load (made from active carbon from my fish tank)
1 x coal wagon with wooden logs
1 x flatbed lumber wagon
2 x log wagons
1 x guards/brake van
You would think that would be getting rather heavy, but Arther still needs more of a challenge! Although there really are grip issues with his wheels now.
Similar layout before, but I also bought 4 more straight bits of track, so it is a simple loop with 2 straights at the ends, and 4 straights down the sides.
Enjoy...Aurthur did.

Nice space there for Auther to stretch his legs . . . .

Running a treat Chris
Maybe time for the heavier wheels?

Yes, I'm tempted. Even possibly spoked ones (wallet bashing though), but bit reluctant to fiddle when he is running so well.

Aslong as you don't fiddle with the steam pipes etc it won't make any difference. Rosa has a good set of heavy wheels and they don't half help!
Oh and some MORE rolling stock

You could put some dead weight into the side tanks to give some extra grip. It doesn't seem to wory about the load so a bit more on the engine insread of behind it would probably do some good.

Not a bad idea, would possibly need to drill some rivets out though to get into the side tanks. So don't want to do that just yet. One to remember should I take it to bits though.
The pps Janet is very heavy compared to a Mamod, think that has ballast in the side tanks.

greast job there Chris
what have you done to arther as our charly couldn't pull the skin of custard. Im very disapionted with him. have added a meths burner and uprated SV from IPenginering lucky to get 6 mins burntime whichisnt enough and it wont pull 2 carriages so whats the secret before charly is sold off

Dunno, sorry! Maybe I was just lucky but Arthur is really eager.
It seems he has upgraded pistons/cylinders but as he is my only loco I don't have another to compare against. He has absolutely no steam leaks. The pistons are very smooth running. I give it a good oiling (pull cylinders away from port face and drip some oil in.
I have ran him quite a few times now, and I suspect the previous owner(s) also put ran him quite a few times so he is well ran in.
Only upgrades I have added are safety valve, water top up, and meths burner.
I have the wicks cut very very short which gives a longer run and still produces enough heat. I stop the engine during the run and top up with meths and water (I was running for about 30 minutes earlier with two meths and water top-ups).
He has improved since I got him, but I put most of that down to the safety valve, but some could just be more running in.
Are you getting up to full pressure? Has the safety valve released? Do you start off with hot water?
My track is certainly not level, so he has to work hard to pull those wagons. The loads I have made are also heavier than the standard mamod polystyrene stuff.

Oh, also is your track new?
Mine was, and it had thick paint on it which has now started to wear off. I also think that has helped with running.

yes track is new and we usualy top up with hot water.
will cut the wick shorter and try that
thanks chris

run it 10 times in a row on blocks like this:
then try it

Ah right, might be better when some of the paint wears off the track then. Think it has helped mine run better as I think the wheels were binding on it a bit.
I top my meths tank up again after the safety valve has popped (careful use of syringe).

How many times?
Any leaks? Visable or audio?
Does it move smoothly by hand? Oiled thorughly?
Is there a leak from the front block with the handle?

Hmmmmm just run it in more.
If it still won't go too well then you'll have to see if the chassis holes line up with the block.

Arthur runs very smoothly by hand. MSS I returned as it didn't work, then started to fall to bits, was as rough as heck by hand.
Don't hold back with the oil.
Listen to MM, his tips got mine running better.

Possibly a slight blockage??
Things always go better backwards. That is just the way of the world.
Also these locos are made in the UK, maybe they don't like running upside down in Oz? Doesn't the meths all pour out?

thanks fellas we will just keep persivering
the RS1 we bought has been posted so looking forward to it turning up in a couple of weeks it has a seized piston so its getting the full mod treatment

Just swap the pistons over if it runs faster backwards. Not much can be blocked on them, just the steam pipe or holes in the block.
Every loco ive ever bought has been in bits first then I re-build
