At last the car is mineHi guys,i hope your all well, sorry i havnt been on for a while but you know the usual things and stuff, anyway i finally got my mitts on the car,but alas the box is long gone and i only have the tablet burning tray that came with it,there is a little scratch on the mudguard over the front nearside wheel, but otherwise just very dusty and needs a good clean, other than that its in mint condition, only used a couple of times in the mid seventies.
Any tips on how to clean it up gratefully recieved its the ten spoked wheel one in case you might be curious, its the cream coloured roadster. ill post pics as soon as iv cleaned it up,cheers.

If its just dust I would just use warm water and a bit of washing up liquid with a soft rag and maybe a cotton bud or two for the more tricky spots. and one clean a drop of two of oil on the moving parts

Looks really good Col! still very white and clean
Have you managed to run it yet? should go well
|
col

Not yet MM,iv only had my hands on it for two hours, but ill need to get some tablets to try it,the tablet burning tray is the only thing that will fit under the boiler,a very narrow fit,so unless there is another way ill have to get hold of some tablets before i fire it,but all looks well with it i think

I'm not 100% sure but the meths burner from your SW1 should fit in there . Well just check to see if it does
I haven't got one of the newer type roadsters. So it's on the to buy list . You should be very very pleased with that one Col

Hi Col,
Good to have you back online...and you came in a dandy looking car I see!!! I have taken a shine to Mamod mobiles I must admit and keep acquiring them...someday a roadster looks like a must have.
If you find a matching paint for the fender scratch, I have found you can make a discrete job of it using a dental pic or pin dipped in paint and paint the scratch like a single hair on a brush...takes a bit of doing but it minimizes the size of the overall repair...just let the paint flow in the scratch itself and minimize what you cover outside the scratch.
cheers,
Roger

Thanks MM i am pretty chuffed ,i didnt think to check the meths burner, ill have a look and let you know

Still has the original laquer on the boiler by the looks of things. That would definatly tie in with it not being fired too much
That's a good idea Rog! you could definatly touch it up Col, without devaluing the engine or anything like that. Like I said the meths burner should fit in there nicely. I don't think Mamod changed the firebox when they introduced solid fuel

Good to have you back Col.
A little tip for that scratch.
Find as near a matching spray white as you can and spray into a small container, like a spray can top, till the paint forms a small pool in the container.
Leave for a few seconds then use an artists paint brush to apply the slightly thickened paint to the scratch.
You'll still be able to see it if you look closely, but it does a reasonable job without respraying the whole mudguard.

I run mine using a repro meths burner from forest classics. So one from a SW should fit.

Ill try that sometime, thanks Roger, and you were right MM the meths burner seems to slot down into the hole a better fit than the tablet one seems to be,chuffed, ill be fireing it up sometime today

Excellent Col! thought it might
I hope it steams well! it should do, not much can go wrong with a Mamod. It may need a bit of running in before it does any racing

I have the same model col and I just use a standard meths burner in mine rather than the solid fuel burner that came with it.

Welcome back Col. A great car and I'm sure you'll have loads of fun with it. The only bit I can add is that the sticker on the front makes it an earlier example of this model. The roadster has had at least 4 different stickers over the years and this is another way to date a model that has changed very little in 30 years.

Thanks Manxman, what year or years does it mean?i never thought of that

From around 1977 onwards
The other type was made for a year.
Yeah they used the old box with the new car a few times. Stuck stickers over the instructions on the back to show a sight glass and solid fuel
Would like to see some pictures of it
