Bargain tool

Hi, I got a bargain today. It was a full size floor standing pillar drill. Normally it costs £200 but it was reduced to £99 so I snapped it up.

With my two way adjustable table vice:

The table cranks up and down and can also be tilted. It has a 100mm drill head travel with depth gauge. Twelve speed settings (by opening the top and adjusting the belt pulley!). The motor is 600W but it runs really quietly, see this video with sound! You can hardly hear the drill going:

So if you want one go to B&Q in central Milton Keynes, they had three more left....
Stilldrillin

WOW! That`s a real bargain!

Also, lots of free space & elbow room, where a bench drill "isn`t"!
tmuir

I've got a similar size pilar drill but it is made for mounting to the bench not the floor, very useful bit of kit.
I like the vice you have for it too.
Andy

great bargin you got there
Sandman

I love the vice too.

If it's not too cheeky, where did you get it??? (The Vice)

No problem. It was eBay of course, it looked really handy and so I bought it a few weeks ago. Not cheap (with postage) as it's pretty heavy. here's another one from the same seller:

You're probably better off trying to source one closer to home perhaps because the postage costs would probably be horrendous.

If only I had £100 to spare! Lucky for me I have a really good tool shop just down the road, plus I get discount as I'm a volunteer at Amberley! Great service, great tools, great people

Good question! Haven't quite got that far.

According to the manual: Speed goes from 210rpm to 2580rpm. It has a table showing the best speed for different drill bit diameters and different materials. The materials are wood, aluminium, plastic, mild steel and stainless steel. Basically it amounts to slow things down as the holes being drilled get bigger. I wouldn't have thought it would have any problem drilling copper or brass since it copes with stainless steel.

The chuck max opening size is 16mm and they don't recommend drilling holes larger than 20mm.

Nice buy !!!

MC...dandy looking drill and vice setup...seems your work space just keeps getting better and better!

I forgot to ask MC, is the table a rack and pinion set up or is it one with a clamp that you move from side to side to raise and lower?

There's a nice handle to crank it up and down (so it's a rack and pinion) and you can also unclamp it and rotate the table round the pole. And then there's another bolt that lets you tilt it. At the moment all I can think of a use for is the up and down facility.
Cranko

That looks to be a very nice pioece of equipment MC, is the vise set up to mill with

Over here we call them a Drill Press. IMHO one of the most useful tools a shop can have. And that sounds like a real good price too!
SillyBilly

Drill Press is a slightly obscure name, considering they don't actually press anything, just makes a pressing motion. I'd heared the term on eBay, but wasn't sure wether the website was nuts, but you've now helped me understand, thank you John!
TRAPPERKEEPER

Obscure? Not here!

The name makes perfect sense! It is a drill, which describes its function, and it is applied by being pressed down upon whatever you are drilling
Cranko

Its a Drill press in kiwi land
Stilldrillin

Drill press is the generic name for a drilling machine, (as opposed to a hand drill).
Both types are nowadays motorised but, originally, drill presses were worked by hand. The drill feed being automatically applied as it rotated.

Pedestal drill (floor or bench standing), and radial arm drill are the most common, with hand feed.
Most of the larger machines have power feed to the quill.

Thanks mate.

That vice gives the drill the capacity to be used for basic milling.

Just what I need.

Well, how many Pedestals do you drill with it? I think Drill Press makes sense
