Barry1946's Tablebarry1946's Table
Hi! Welcome to my table!
First a little bit about me.
I am a collector and restorer also having built engines from castings kits.
I only restore when an engine is really far gone. These are, on the whole, old engines and I consider that fair wear and tear is acceptable and even desirable in some cases.
Enough chat about me - now for some engines!
I assume that there will be many Mamod engines on tables around STWWW so I thought I would display something different from my collection so first let me show you my SEL collection.
I have restored both the 1550 and 1530.
SEL (Signal Equipment Ltd) also made a marine engine which Mamod fitted on their ME3
As I said I also build engines from castings kits. Here are my Stuart S50 and V10. You will see that the V10 is not quite finished with a little work neededd on the cylinder head.
-and my A.J. Reeves “Trojan”
Like many others I have also modified a Mamod TE1a. The colour in the pic is a little light, the engine is in fact maroon.
I have added a rear end which still allows the burner to be placed.
The reverse lever can be operated from the cab using a connecting lever. The biggest modification is the introduction of a throttle control again operated by a lever in the cab.
I made a new safety valve to give a different look, and added brass wheel nuts.
Here are close ups of the boiler top mods.
Last, but not least, my Bowman.
I have left my M135 unrestored as I think it has character and has a good representation of its age.
I’m not sure if I should polish up the boiler or just give it a cleanup, what do you think?
My last exhibit is my M180, completely untouched since I bought it. I think this one has gone too far and should be fully restored. Although I could perhaps leave the base, just cleaning it up and restoring the rest. Again, I would value your opinion.
Thanks for visiting my table, hope it was both informative and enjoyable.
I am looking forward to your comments, and discussing your views with you!
Enjoy the rest of STWWW!

Love that TE, great mods and if it was me I would get the paint out on those Bowmans.

The TE mods look great and as you do such great restorations, I would say go for it.

Great collection , I would leave the 135 as it is but do up the 180.

Personally, I'd fully restore both Bowmans. They are both too far gone for my liking. Rust will only get worse (unless you bury them in silica gel!)

Seems that so far opinion is to restore both Bowmans (or should that be 'Bowmen"?)

Here's another with the same opinion Barry.
What a great mod on the TE. The linkage to the back is simply brilliant.
Modding at its best mate.

I would love to get hold of a SEL marine engine, so far no luck
Great collection

Lovely selection you have.
I would pretty much leave the 135 as is but restore the 180 fully. Also your custom TE1A is stonking!

Very good pictures Barry. Personally I'd restore both Bowmen, though I can see the argument for leaving the 135 as it is. Restoring it wouldn't really add to its value, but it would look good!

Very nice collection Barry,
I had no idea you had so many engines!

Great restorations, cant imagine what you will do with the M135

OK, everyone recommends the M180 should be restored!
So here we go!
I'll post the finished engine on "Restorations" when it's finally done.

Better already. It'll be a cracker Barry!

The TE1A is a really nice example, the mod to the throttle is very clever---

Thanks Geoff, I think it might look better if I shortened the reverse lever rod as it makes the linkage rather high at that end. It shouldn't hamper the workings.

Hope so!

Great photos Barry. The chimney on the 135 looks like it is made from rolled brass rather then a tube. Mine is rolled. Interesting.

Do you think its original? or been replaced at some time? The rest looks as if everthing is original.

The chimney on my 135 is original and is made from brass tubing, that is, it has no seam.

Thats comforting. I was a little suspicious of it, but it fits well onto the base boss, has a hole in the right place and does indeed "look right". I will leave well alone!

Paint stripping last night, spraying today!
A last contribution - what I hope to have finished for STWWW 2010!
It's a castings kit and is still in the box. It is next on the list after the M180 resto.

Oh Barry...that is eye candy of the first order. Wow, so beautiful!
Is it a kit of machined pieces or do you have to machine from castings. I would tackle a kit, but don't have machining capability.
Really lovely!

It's in rough castings so all need machining. They are very good quality and need the minimum of work. Lathe essential, I hope there is no milling required as I don't have that facility, it would have to be a file and lapping!
