Best Bargain

Out of all the purchases you have ever made (Toy Steam related preferrably!) what do you think is the best bargain you have ever had?

Mine would have to be my mint, unfired, unused RS3 set which I bought on eBay for £177!! I hadn't bought anything on eBay for a while up until the RS3 set, so I was dead chuffed (no pun intended )

Dampfzauberer

I think that would be either my doll twincylinder for 50 euro's (plus 200 for restoration) or my Marklin Locomobile in perfect condition, with all Instructions and partly the box bought on ebay for 170 euro...
Mister Occlusion

I'm beginning to think it's the Jensen 25 I just bought... I got a congratulatory you-lucky-bugger email from one of the Jensen collectors who told me that if he hadn't been away he'd have bid $250 on it. I got it for $170, and the last time it went around I lost it to someone who bid almost $600 on it.
Lucky, AND weird.

Second up would have to be my fine collection of PSM generators. Best model dynamos in the world, and by far the best price.
Cranko

A virtually unused Old smokey in its box for eqivilant of about 13 quid would be mine

I'll give you £15 quid for it. Go on, you'll make a profit. Everyone is a winner
Cranko

I SOLD MY PREVIOUS ONE FOR 180 QUID , ALL BRASS AND UNUSED
Mamodman123

SP1 unused for 7.50 was a damn good buy!

My mint SW1 green boxed for 19 pounds

Loads really, but MTA you got a right good bargain with that cracking RS3 set

Ok, ok, if we are going to barter... how about £17.50?
rangerssteamtoys

Unfired mamod SA1 for 170 usd
MooseMan

Got to be my Wormar Super C, but I'm not telling, because nobody would ever talk to me again.
johnreid

My cast base Jensen 25 by far and probably the best deal I ever will get, but out of courtesy I will not state the price, but if you knew it, we would have to go and pick Mr O off of the floor.
All that I can add is that it is truly an object of obsession.

BIN at that price what was the seller thinking? One of my Wormars looks like it has the same colour base as yours, perhaps they belonged to the same person at one point?

The colour on my base is just the bare metal....90% of the plating has worn off. If you look VERY carefully you can just about make out the logo.

it must be the picture or my eyes then it looked a pale blue colour to me, i nearly feel of my stool when i saw the listing One of those ebay quirks, still in the listing but sold when you open the page. I had it happen to me a couple of years back with a pre war SE2 at a similar price. Never mind at least it has gone to a good home, not onto a trader to make an obscene profit.
The base should be Nickel plated

Thanks mate! I'm delighted to have it, it will never leave my collection. I've remedied some of the extremely dodgy soldering and replaced one broken steam pipe, but apart from that and a gentle clean it stays "as is". The burner wasn't nearly as bad as it looked either...is it normal for these burners to have a vent hole away from the filler plug?
Graham-Jilly

our best bargain was a bin box of unused curved mamod track 8 pices in a box bin price £5.00 per box couldnt hit the buy button quick enough
edit: we got 2 boxes

My best bargain may have occured last nite...

While trolling the web I stumbled on what has to be the best priced early forties Jensen 10 (riveted boiler/stand alone lamp post) engine/generator combination in the world.

I have PayPaled my money (in about 3 nanoseconds) and I'm now waiting breathlessly to find out if it was a mistake, scam, badly damaged or maybe the real thing...but the flat price of $90 USD (yes, ninety) knocked my socks off.

It is very rare and one like it (in nicer condition) sold for $1700 USD a year ago on eBay. I have little at risk and a lot of hoping and prayin' about now!!! At least it was what looked like a reputable US online antique reseller and not something residing in China...I've gotten confirming emails, PayPal paper trail etc. etc.

We shall see!!!

Cool! I hope it turns out to be the real thing. A pair in the Temple would be so nice, just imagine, Stereo!

Rog, I hope this one works out in your favour, that'll be a forth riveted boiler in the Temple.

$90USD for a #10, still carn't believe it
tmuir

My Kookaburra for $250 (retails for near $800)
MooseMan

Wow Rog, the gods of steam were smiling on you for sure - a great addition to the Temple!
Cranko

I hope it all works out for you Rog ! hellava deal if it happens
SillyBilly

It's got to be my Vertical/Horizontal, about £30 including postage off eBay.
James

Rog, I want to cry

Dunno what mine would be... I have had quite a few. Maybe flatbase SE1 for £20? Old Glory TE (Ltd Ed. 250) for £50 with log trailer?
flywheel61

Mine has to be my Renown vertical, Tony refers to it as the OZ buy of the year.

The only one seen so far complete with both it's decal and burner, a steal at AUD$276.00, (GPB100) - about half what I thought it would fetch.

Cheers

Chris
Steve_S

My M140, in many pieces among some old Meccano in a cardboard box, was £11.... which I was quite pleased with.
Wallace

Mine would be the Pre War SE1
IndianaRog

Alas...just learned that my bargain of a lifetime (a riveted boiler Jensen 10 from the '30's for the price of $90 USD)...turned out to have been sold two years earlier without the database of items being updated. At least that is the story antique store is telling me. They shipped me a Jensen 60 in it's place which although a lovely engine in it's own right, just doesn't quite take the place of the one I "thought" I had.

Oh well...vendor is refunding me my money and all I'm out is a ding in the armor...the old adage: "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true"....sure seemed to apply here!

Resuming speed,
Rog
tmuir

Bummer Rog, if they are refunding your money do you have to send the other engine back? And if so I hope at the sellers expense.
johnreid

Dang, thats a bummer.
IndianaRog

Seller has already refunded me all my PayPal payment including enough for return shipping of the engine I don't want and PayPal fees too. I've already gotten the payment this am...so I'm no worse than I was a week ago...at least in the finance dept., but oh the euphoria of thinking you have found a jewel only to find later it
was never to be.

Such is the hunt...win some, lose some.

cheers,
Rog
