BIG arrival at the Water Closet of SteamThe Postal Carrier delivered this carton to my door a short time ago
Wonder what it could be?

Something BIG.

Still unpacking, this one has some Girth to it I believe

The Long Awaited BIG package is here!!!

The excitement is beyond words, this is the centerpiece of my collection.
and for scale
I want to do some dusting and lubrication to it before use. I think I will enjoy cleaning this one well and then run it. No need to rush things, I need to make a gasket for the whistle and just sit back and soak in the beauty of this fine piece of German engineering.
The shelves of the Water Closet Of Steam are being graced by the presence of a Fleischmann 135/2, or as James calls them, a Girth Fleischmann.

It even has the burner!
That is one amazing engine.

its the same type as James isnt it?

Les

That is just wonderful and I didn't realise how big it is until you dwarfed the Grinder with it.

Fantastic John,
That one will be a source of continuous pleasure.
And if you want to attend STIA in person, all you have to do is sell the burner on e bay.

Wow! Talk about smallmans syndrome with my little 130/2 now!!! That looks like a real cracker and in great order too.

Yes it is the same type as James, and Richard has one also. I have been editing some pictures of an Airplane ride today for my friend who gave me my ticket so I have not been able to do much to the engine YET. It is in too good of a condition to need anything but a thorough cleaning, oiling and of course firing.
I think Tonight will be when I get to run it as I do have a few things to take care of first.
This has been quite a day.

I think you have to turn the whole safetyvalve 180 degrees
Nice engine there!

Wow the engine must have got quite wet at some point.....look at the rust on the firebox...that's new to me
|
johnreid

Danke, I will do so.

John,
That is simply a beautiful example of Nuremburg era toy steam at it's finest. I'm thinking the Water Closet of Steam is beginning to bust at it's seams...can expansion be far off?
Seriously, that will be a joy to run...glad it made it in good shape...a bit of firebox rust could have been dampness somewhere along the way, easy to remove.
I guess this has been a "Girth" DAY for you spending part of it in a Ford Trimotor airplane and part opening such a nice surprise.
cheers...enjoy!!!

I think the box was rained upon in transit. There were lots of water spots and the papers in the box were wet. However it isnt bad rust and most of it just wiped off.
Now, for the Steaming report, sorry no videos today. I boiled two cups of distilled water which I put in the Boiler, then I added another cup! Less than half full!
Then I set out to fill the burner, I probably put enough Meths in the burner to fill three SE3 burners, and it still was only about 1/2 full, I continued to add Meths till it was about 3/4 full and lit the burner. This thing looks like three torches, I placed it in the Firebox and shut the door, but opened the vents on the side of the firebox.
In a matter of less than a minute the Pressure Gauge showed about 1 bar of pressure ( my first pressure gauge on a Steam Engine ) I opened the regulator and it took off on its own! I thought that only twins did that. The regulator can control the speed of the engine from fast to way too fast
The engine at full speed is almost impossible to hold still and when it was held still, the items on the countertop started dancing around. This thing has tons of power.
This is the first engine that I owned that the smell of burning Meths was detectable, I think it is because of the volume of Meths being burned.
About 10 or 15 minutes later ( I think as I probably lost track of time ) the burner ran out of fuel and the engine came to a stop.
When running, I can open the whistle and it doesnt even slow down a bit!
I know that this one is going to see some use.
I have to ask those who have these or had them, how do or did you used the vents on the side of the firebox? Open when running? Closed till pressure builds? Closed all of the time?
Another great thing about this engine is the abundance of oil ports, there is no excuse for not getting just the right amount of oil on it, no frothing from too much, but a good smooth run from well lubricated surfaces.
Truly my favorite engine.

video!!!!!
|
johnreid

I will probably video it tomorrow, an excuse to run it too
The exhaust from the engine shot out of the back and went out for a plume of steam condensate that was probably 8 foot out! this thing is just something else. I am ecstatic with it.

Very Very Nice
You know I'm very fond of the Nurnberg engines and yet the only Fleischmann I have is the smallest model made.
After seeing yours and Richard's this is definetly on my Wish List !
|

I have the 120 also Al
my only Fleischmann oscillator.
I really enjoy my 122/4 and there is one on Ebay now
I am now about out of funds, but will be on the lookout for Fleischmann engines. Especially ones I can afford

Mime is similar to the 120 with an end plug , a whistle and green base that I've got.
Not impressive as your grand model but it's cute. Just ordered some Esbit and it's going to a 13 year old nephew that's going to love it.
|
johnreid
|
I bet yours is a 120/4
They are fun engines too, and cheap to operate as only one tablet of Esbit is used per firing. A good choice for a young steamer.

What a very nice engine John
Well done

John,
the vents are just dummuies
Look beneath them..they are open on the underside...
So i guess it has no really effect if they are open or shut

Wow. Completely gobsmacked. For an engine that is still on the attainable list (i.e. not priced out of my reach!) that's a fantastic example.

Woo! Finally got it John
Looks a brilliant engine and sounds like you're over joyed with it!
