Bing engine Resto

Ok, only a start, I have to get the other pics. Wasn't the pic I was looking for to start the thread, I can't find that one at the moment.
Should get more pics soon.

My Brothers Bing Engine Restoration. Engine was bought without flywheel. First thing was to make a new flywheel, which he did. Brass, heavy, and it has copper spokes (I think).

When I get more pics, may open up a new can of worms on the restoration and repainting thing.

Pic is of flywheel, and untouched engine. Flywheel made with everyday tools ( I will get details), and of course as usual, no lathe

Mamodman123

That wheel really does look well made Wallace . Interested to hear how he made it? not the electric drill again surely?
Wallace

Indeed, any lathing would have been the electric drill.
Not sure exactly how he made it, but will get details when I get all the pics.

Has he fired it since the wheel was made Wallace? looks a very nice engine
Wallace

It has been fired in the pic you can see, but since being completely finished it hasn't been fired.

My old man said he was at his place getting a piece of glass or something to make a display case. Sounds like it's going to be a shelfer

I also forgot to add, he made a burner for it.

I just gotta get the cd of pics off him. Got a lot of steamy sorta stuff to do this week actually. Oops, should say steam engine sorta stuff. Lotta pics of meccano to take too.

Just getting the time to do it is the hard bit

LOL

Looks interesting Wallace, I look forward to seeing the rest of the pictures
Wallace

I managed to find the pic he sent me that I was originally going to post.

Another thing that was missing is the chimmney. So he made one.

The before pic is as it was bought off ebay. The after pic is the finished product.

A nice job I think. A little shame it won't be fired anymore

Mamodman123

Looks brilliant Wallace! that's a serious piece of kit now

I love the flywheel! proper job!!
Steely

Your brother really is talented Wallace.
Wallace

Yeah it's not bad I think. Paid around 50pound I think
Although I haven't seen it in person fully finished, it doesn't appear to be overdone.

How long did it take him to do it?
Wallace

About 2 weeks I think. Doing it at night.
Apart from making the missing parts, everything else was virtually ok I think.
Once I get full details I'll post em here, and pics on my website

Now that is amazing.
Mamodman123

2 weeks to get that standard of finish and completness is outstanding work!
Wallace

Here's a couple more pics.
Full details and more pics are at my website http://www.freewebs.com/mamodsteam/ on the restorations page

Homemade parts for the engine

A couple of closeups

sparky

thats brilliant work well done
Wallace

Thanks Sparks. Well thanks from my brother I guess

He did the resto work.
sparky

well done brother ! real good job
John Chapman

Your Brother has made a superb job of that Bing, congratulations to him.
Steve_S

It's a work of art Wallace. Outstanding!
Wallace

Thanks guys. I'll pass on the comments to him
Dauntless

as an engineer I can appreciate the quality and effort gone into that

top job
Mamodman123

It's a very nice model indeed! excellent work!
toxx

... if only to repeat what all the other lads have allready said: Brilliant! Just like that tale from the ugly duckling turning into a swan ... I'd be happy if I could do a resto job 1/100 as nicely as this.
A real inspiration for all of us ... and it reallly won't be fired anymore?
A little video of her tack-tack-tacking away would be excellent!
Kind greetz, Tom
Sandman

Jeez Wallace. That engine never looked better.

Can your brother walk on water, because that transformation is nothing short of miraculous mate.
Wallace

Thanks for the comments Sandy and Toxx

I don't know how he does it either. Patience is a big part I think.

Wish I could do half as good at it.

Toxx, the engine is now in a specially made wooden and glass case, and hasn't been fired since it's resto.

But here is a video of it running on air, from a fish tank pump.
It's shows the quality of a bing engine I think, cos I tried the same pump on my mamods, and it didn't work on one of them

I'm going to see him this weekend, and will try get details/tips on homemade engines and burners, then post it up.
I still haven't asked, or worked out how he made end caps for his other mamod style burner
mc_mc

Beautiful, I've got a fish tank pump (my gold fish committed sucide by getting itself wedged in a narrow gap in the 'castle' I bought it) so will have to see if I can run any of my engines with it.

Wallace

Worth a try MC.

That pump came close to running my MEC1, but that was all.

Hard to see in the video, but he made a manifold type setup, to connect all the hoses into one.

The problem with them is they don't allow any pressure buildup.

But definitely worth a shot
IndianaRog

Wallace, I sure wish I had a talented brother like you do!!! Just gorgeous work and it runs like a clock.

Great stuff!

Rog
erikl

that;'s a job well done!
Great to see a old engine like that rise to it's former glory again.
