Bing overtype

Well, you may have noticed it’s been a bit quiet on the steamgranny restoration front recently. That’s because my ‘workshop’ for dirty jobs is the garden table!
But we had some warmer weather recently & managed to get a few things done
Normally I should have been showing you another restoration but that is held up after discovering a blocked steam pipe & will probably have to be changed, so more on that one soon ( I hope!).
In the meantime I temporarily finished a little Bing overtype, acquired in bits from UK with a replacement base. ‘Temporary’ because I intended to redo base with a decal copy of the Bing pattern but haven’t got the right decal paper in stock. Therefore, I simply printed it out on photographic paper, stuck it on, plus several coats of petrol resistant lacquer spray. But due to piercing holes for burner & firebox tabs, destructive infiltration will inevitably occur
A picture below plus a couple of videos of this very silent, sedate & altogether satisfying chuffer over in the video section. Such a shame it doesn’t exhaust via that magnificent chimney!
If anyone has an idea of date & model, I’d be grateful

SG...that turned out really beautiful...Bings just have a certain something about them and THAT overtype got plenty of it.  Wow, your workmanship is impeccable.  You might give that base print a fair try out, sealing the screw and/or tab holes needed to prevent excess penetration of water and steam gunk.  You would have the same issues with a decal, so since this looks so good, I would do everything I could to preserve it...perhaps dabs of epoxy on those penetration points top and bottom.

Great job, lovely backdrop for the photo.

Thanks    It exhausts directly out back of cylinder block through tiny pinhole under steam inlet pipe
Graham-Jilly

The embossed trademark dates it between 1900 and 1909 according to Shires Toy Steam Engine book.
I have one and I too am trying to date it.

It is a very lovely looking engine and one to treasure. I've watched the videos and it's a sweet little runner.
MooseMan

Absolutely gorgeous....I love how you've done the base, that looks just perfect. And the end cap onthat little engine's stunning - what a beauty!
johnreid

A true example of the Golden Era, beautiful
Mamodman123

Wow nice job!

The end cap is something different
Steve_S

Thats looks very good indeed!
Nick

Did they all come with that endcap? Or was it a feature for only certain years?

Thanks very much Les for the information, that begins to situate it age-wise.
And, no Nick, they didn't all come with the embossed end cap. Some had logo embossed on firebox. Base plates differ, too, as does the pattern & have seen about 3 different versions of it to date but believe this to be an earlier version, confirmed by Les' info.

The embossed boiler ends can make dating difficult becouse although they were used between 1900-1909 they could also be found on engines produced between 1924-1932. I have such an example in my collection.

The fact the base is in such could condition makes me feel it is later than 1909 although Im most likely wrong!!!!!!
Nick

I was just asking questions, because I was bidding on this one:

I didn't win, but I see how the base design matches yours.
johnreid

I wanted to bid on that one too, but the timing was off for me. The darned banker thinks that I need money in my account before I go and buy things, has no idea of what fun is.
Nick

It was only at $30, so I bid a little over $60. The shipping to me was only $3.70.
Reid

First sight of your work here, SG!

It is stunning! I'm off to see the video now!

Thanks for the lovely work and equally gorgeous images!
Stilldrillin

That is beautifull!
Sandman

Once again, a beautiful Job SG.

A real looker.

One to be very proud of.
