Hey, what a beauty! the m135 was my first Bowman, and probably still my favourite, great engine
BTW, if anyone needs reproduction Bowman decals....I still have a few. Better that Paper 'n' Steam, I promise!

The 135 is my favourite Bowman. Mines an E, but the Ms are good too! What do you intend to do about the missing chimney top, and the oiler lid? You've got the oiler tap though... they're usually missing! Do you have the burner? Its interesting that your engine has the chimney stay... I mean the threaded rod that passes through the chimney to support it. Some 135s have that and others don't. My E135 doesn't have one.

E = wood base M = metal.

E has wooden base, M has metal base, so SM's engine is an M135.

I've had an oiler cover ordered from PPS for about 5 months now.
I gave up on that and Dauntless has kindly agreed to make the oiler cover and chimney top so I should be O.K.
Looking forward to getting started on it . Mikes vid is a joy to behold.

Before I start could I ask for a bit of information from M135 owners?
What's under the cylinder covers? (I know there's a cylinder). I mean is there anything else I should look out for.?
Secondly, is there any knack or special way of removing the covers for polishing? I don't want to damage them in any way.
Any help or information in this area, or on any other snag that might crop up, would be most appreciated.

I find that heating the covers up a bit helps....then make like you're removing a boiler endcap, only without the soldering . Gently push around the edges with a square tool (I have a screwdriver that I filed the edges off for the purpose).
|
SPOKESMAN
|
The cylinder cover on the M135 can be tricky to get off - as Moose say heat it a little (Maybe), and gently tap the at the lip - mine I remember were a little seized but came with a little bit of care.
|
Steve_S
|
The lip on the covers isn't very wide so they have to be a fairly tight fit to stop them vibrating off when the engine is running. But as the others have said, they should come off with a few gentle(ish) taps.

|
E/M 135You can tap the end covers off easily. But please use a piece of wood or bamboo, not a screwdriver because if it slips it may scratch.
I often run mine with the end covers removed, as it enables one to oil between the oscillating cylinder and the portblock with steam oil.
As for your missing chimney top, the best solution I have found is to use brass rivets for tents and sails. They come in many sizes but you will find a reasonable fit. The only problem is that the look a bit flat topped, but are much better than a bare tube. You will have to paint the rivet a matt black to match the original Bowman finish.
Hope this helps

Only managed to have an hour in the workshop today but managed to achieve a full strip down ready for the nitromors bit.
No apparent problems. The cylinder covers came off with no trouble after I applied a little heat. (Thanks Mooseman)
A word of warning for others attempting the M135. Watch when dismantling, as behind the cylinder are two little brass spacers on the cheesehead retaining screws that could easily be lost. I certainly did not expect that, but luckily noticed them just as I separated the assembly.
My main concern is the state of the base. I dont think I'll get away with it this time. Although the decal is great, there is significant paint loss right through to the metal and a lot of deep rust. I'll take a pic later and you can give me an opinion guys. I really don't want to repaint, but I don't want to waste the big engine for the sake of a base respray.
|
Mamodman123
|
I'll offer as much advice as I can. It all depends on where the paint loss is for me.... but we'll see. Glad to see you cracking on with it anyway. It's one of the best Bowmans around
I'd like to see it kept original as possible, you know me...
|
MooseMan
|
Sandman, you could try this:
get some clear water slide transfer paper....cut it to exactly the shape of the decal, and apply. Then respray your base. As long as you don't leave it too long, you can then very carefully just very slightly lift the edge of the transfer film if you wet it. If you then get some water underneath it, it'll lift right off.
No guarantees though. If you are going to respray, it would make sense to protect the decal by varnishing it first - then you can be sure it doesn't come off with the waterslide stuff.
Good luck!
|
SPOKESMAN
|
Whatever method you employ - preserve that decal.!
|
Mamodman123
|
Maybe just leave the base, treat the rust and fire it up more than the others?
|
Sandman
|
Thanks guys.
O.K. Here it is.
As you can see it's quite bad.
I need some opinions ideas pros and cons please.
Let me have it straight from the shoulder and I'll weigh everything up before I make a decision.
|
MooseMan
|
Preserve the decal - that's one of the best I've seen!
With care, you can still paint the base....
|
SPOKESMAN
|
If it was me SM, Id carefully strip it by hand, prime by hand with a brush and paint with a brush - its the only way to avoid that decal - if you can colour match the red your're home and dry!
|
Mamodman123
|
I suggest SM that you respray it but try and cover the decal with something heavy and the right shape maybe? Possible a weighted lid to something? I wouldn't paint brush it unless you have to, might not look right. Not sure on this one SM
When in doubt listen to the more experienced members
Mooseman and Mike will know best

A very good standard of finish can be obtained with a brush - good priming and preperation - look at the thickness of the enbamel on mine - where its chipped - just my old fashioned/traditional way of doing things MM!

Yes preperation is everything when it comes to painting as ive found out a few times
|
Steve_S
|
I hate decisions like this! It would be much easier if the decal was gone or very poor. But as it is you must preserve the decal because its in very good condition. You could just clean up the rest of the base... maybe with Tcut (but protect the decal if you do!) then wax or laquer the whole thing to prevent further rusting. Whatever you do, good luck with it!
|
Sandman
|
Thanks for all the tips and help guys.
I'm going to try to gently clean it up and see what it looks like with the surface dirt removed.
Even if I decide not to repaint, I will have to do something to arrest the progress of the rust.
This is a hard one to call. I'm glad I've got help to make the decision.
More pics when I clean it up.
|
Wallace
|
Respray, brushpaint or clean?
That's a real hard choice there mate.
You're better off to start at trying a clean up, like steve said.
If it doesn't look any good, then next step of painting.
If you had a surefire way of covering that decal, spray would be great. I'd be looking at something that fits neatly over decal and covering that with a weighted object of the same size. Even if it's a little bigger. Sure the paint at edge of decal will be a little rough, but I wouldn't mind if it were me.
Would you be using a spray can or airbrush?
Mike's right, brush painting can look great if done correctly. Maybe try it on some spare metal first?

Just to keep all up to date. I've not done anything more to the big Bowman as I've been concentrating on kitting out my little workshop.
I've been giving a lot of thought to the tools I'll need and I've decided on the following.
A Drill Press
A Bench Grinder
A Small Lathe
I,ve bought the first two, (Pics Below) and I'm looking at a few different lathes.
Anything else you might think I'll need. Suggestions greatfully received.

I would consider maybe chaging one grinder wheel to a polishing wheel. May be useful at sloe speeds for polishing wheels or something?
Not sure what you have but a Vice is a must for some jobs! otherwise, it looks like you have it pretty much covered!
The lathe will come in handy! all round Sandmans for whistle making

Polishing mop sounds good MM.
I've got a little vice that clamps to the bench at the moment but I plan on getting a full size engineers vice a little later.
I'll need to do a lot of homework on the lathe but on the bright side the missus is going halves for my Xmas. (Can't be bad)
I've a lot of mates still in engineering who might be able to help me with tooling and stuff, so I'm going to consult them before buying anything.

I've continued this thread although it's for my newer engine I hope to display at the STIA.
I thought all I had to do was clean this one up as it was in really good nick.
It is a corker of an engine with all the original bomb proof laquer still in place.
I stripped it down to the component parts for the nitromores treatment and guess what??
The bloody steam pipe was loose in the block.
Someone had tried to loosen the union nut which was soldered to the steam pipe and loosened the pipe in the block.
I could tell by the way the pipe was twisted.
I couldn't believe it. This was a far worse job than the last, as the two pipes were virtually on top of one another in a very small block.
I thought I'd have a go at it and prepared it thoroughly. I used the big torch again and much to my surprise I got it first time.
I think Mooseman got it right. Fierce heat applied quickly really does the trick.
I can't believe I've done it again. That was only my second solder job.
If I remember rightly, MM had a spate of burst threads.
I hope this is the last of burst steam pipes for me.
I don't think I could stand the stress.
However there's a little pang of satisfaction when you manage to fix it.
Anyway. The boiler and chimney are polished and I'm waiting for the smaller components to complete the nitromores treatment.
So it's back to the workshop soon and more of the saga later.

Just back in from the workshop MM.
Screwed the overflow plug in and blew into the boiler.
The steam pipe is clear (thank god)
Tried the exhaust just in case and it's clear too. (Phew)
The only thing thats been restored on this engine is the base.

Shame about the decal, but you can't really be too suprised. They are very old engines. I say any part of an original decal is always a bonus. But after all, it's your Bowman, you do what you want with it
Glad to hear both pipes are clear! they can block very easily! especially if you have to resolder, rather than use what is already around the broken joint

It could be that SM...I'm not too sure to be honest most of them seem to have chips that have rusted It could just be something that happens with age but Mikes SE4 has lasted well and that throws out a load of gunge.
Yes time does fly SM! You lose track of time when you are enjoying doing up an engine! A good sense of self achievement after aswell |
It does, Im sure the oil helps to protect it!
Lets see it SM - we can give you an honest opinion then!

Usually when you see an SE4 its in good condition. Maybe the paint was thicker? Advanced painting techniques?

O'K. Here it is.
Remember that it's just in from the workshop and hasn't had it's final rub up yet.
I've taken a few pics from different angles to give you a good view of the decal.
Remember I'm taking this to the STIA so I don't want to let the forum down.
What do I do with the base????

Looks fine to me SM! If you don't have the time to respray it then it'll be fine for STIA. I don't think you'll let the forums down because of one base SM
Engine looks lovely SM! Will look good with the others

Thanks MM. I was thinking it didn't look as bad as I thought at first.
I think I'll look at replacing the decal if not now, certainly in the future.

Sounds like a good idea SM! decal doesn't look that bad, but I would replace it I guess

It looks very good SM! I think I'd leave it alone... its a beauty.

Did you ever make a decision about the base on your other M135 SM? I remember it had a really good decal, but some paint loss

Thanks Steve I was really pleased at the way it turned out. I want everything as good as possible for the STIA.
The way I look at it we're representing the forum and some of the biggest names in toy steam restoration are going to be there. (Some from our own ranks)
As long as we can hold our heads up I'll be happy.

Id certainly leave it SM, it looks spot on . . .
No worries there!!

Thanks Mike and MM.
If you're OK with it that's fine with me.
Right, on to that other base. I think I'll be able to salvage that decal.
I'll use the same method as I used on the SE1. The Yosa method.
That masking fluid is great stuff and if I can match the paint as well as the last time, I've won a watch.
Here's the base. What do you think???

Don't feel intimidated by people with 10 Se4's SM, I know there will be some big guns there who have more rare stuff than us lot put together. I'm not bothered though, they won't pick faults with your engines SM, they are spot on!
I'm confident we'll get an excellent display especially with your Bowmans
Reguarding the base, I guess it's a respray, as long as you can do the same standard as that SE1 you'll be home and dry

Thanks mate. I guess I'm getting a bit nervous now that it's really getting close.
Remember I'm not long into the hobby and if you had told me I would be exhibiting alongside Spokesman , yourself, and getting viewed by the likes of Mooseman, I would have laughed and asked you if you had been drinking.
I never thought I would get up tight about this day but I am.
I've never done anything like this before.
I'm really looking forward to it, but I'll be looking to you guys to keep me right.

I've never displayed my engines before either SM, so if it helps you are not alone but i'm sure we can all pull together and help eachother through and have a really good time.
I can't wait to see some of the engines off here on display, especially that twin bowman you have
No need to get nervous, we'll have a good time hopefully everything goes right on the day. Which reminds me, we need to make pre-event plans, are we meeting up somewhere? or exchanging details or anything like that? or do we all make our way to the event and meet there?

Jeez MM. Never thought of that.
I know Mike is going to be there the night before and I'm travelling in from Stoke on the day.
I think we should arrange a time between us and maybe meet up in the car park prior to setting up.
That way we could go in en block and set up to suit us. We'd better give it plenty of time so we can do it right. (And have time for a look round once done)

MAybe a PM to everyone displaying models? We could swap mobile numbers nearer the date I guess. Failing that everyone knows what my car looks like
We need to be set up by 12 (we're let in at 11) then we get an hour to look around untill the public are let in

Doesn't bother me SM/MM - bring it on - I've been doing this long enough to know what Im talking about and what Im doing - all your stuff SM looks spot on, I've come across a lot of collectors in the past ie steam engines/classic bikes some are OK some are right up their own backsides - 3 things I hate in life - smoking, non-punctuality and pretentiousness.
Dont worry a jot. As for other guys having stuff that'll put our stuff in the shade, Im not so sure - colelctively we have a very desireable bunch of engines - they'll look knockout together!!

Good on yer Mike. (Had to answer a phone call)
MM, Good idea about the PM and the mobile Numbers.
I'll certainly be there in plenty of time so there will be no problem in meeting from my side.
Have you decided what you're bringing yet??
I've finalised my stuff.
5 Bowmans including the Luton.
The three Discers.
The Wilesco Traction Engine
Bit of variety there.
