Bowman 410 (video on p2)Well folks, here is how it arrived today....missing cab roof, one wheel, burner and all boiler fittings, but otherwise complete, including the all-important drive gear. Piston seized solid. Cab fairly mangled, but nothing torn.
Borrowed a wheel from my tender, and applied liberal green velvet to the piston.
Piston came loose without any problems (just old steam oil) and is in great condition, generating very healthy compression. Straightened out the cab and fitted properly, and gave the whole shebang a good wipedown....looking better already, with some borrowed boiler fittings. I have a good feeling about this!!

That's great. Apart from the missing bits it's in very good condition. I'll bet it goes well!

I would sure think that a new roof would be fairly easy to fabricate. The wheel wold be the hardest part.
I believe Boiler fittings are available,

Cant wait to see this one on the rails.

Parts maybe cheaper from here, they may even have a wheel.

Great looking loco Moose.

Check the link Les has put up.
I've bought stuff off him for my 234 locos.
he is very helpful and if tender wheels fit he sells new repro ones.

Thanks guys - I've dealt with Chris before, I'll give him a buzz.

OOooh. I'm looking forward to the trials Odilon.
Looks promising mate.

Looks like the risk has paid off The missing bits shouldn't be too hard to find/make.

Very nice mate. Looking forward to seeing it in full steam.

Worse case a new wheel could be turned on a lathe.

Ja man!
Good news - I've found a source for the burner and the wheel, that'll save me a job!
|
johnreid

Cool, that means that much sooner that it gets under steam!

Wonderful news, Moose! My mate with the 410 needed a new burner which he initially made himself but then managed to source a more correct reproduction. I really look forward to seeing your 410 in steam! Shouldn't be too terribly long with all of the parts sourced.

Great stuff Moose, often engines that stopped working with bits missing and never replaced are the best of runners having not been flogged to death

moose,
ja well, no fine!

lets get going moose! I wanna see this one!

JUst had a phonecall from the gent who is making me a repro burner - it's in the post!
I expect things will move quickly once that gets here. He's also mafe me a wheel, which just needs facing off and the tyre taking down to size, and centre drilling - time to crack out the lathe. Got some small parts to turn anyway.

I hope the Mail strike causes no delays

Serious progress......the wheel and burner arrived today, made by a gentleman who specialises in very accurate Bowman replicas. All I had to do was centre drill the wheel for the shaft, an easy job on my little lathe.
Here is the burner:
Time to see if she'll run on blocks - that'll be a yes!!
Bit of video - you may be able to see that the wheels are running backwards - this is because the whole saft can be rotated, reversing the gear and making this technically the only Bowman loco capable of running backwards!

Too cool, a plus to being roofless. one can see the flywheel and cylinder working, that is what makes the 410 so interesting to me

She certainly runs well! Could you just explain the bit about it being reversible? I'm not sure how that works.
|
Les
|
Very nice indeed Moose.

Steve, the drieve gear passes through the support for the wheel shaft - this support is retained with a nut. Slacken this off , and you can rotate the entire assembly around the gear, see picture.

Ah, I see. Thanks!

Reversible, but not on the fly

OOOooh, I do like that Odilon.
I have no doubt it will run round the track going like the clappers.

Just a quick picture....basically it's finished! Thanks to Nick's careful measurements making a new cab roof was a piece of cake. The new wheel can be seen on the rear here. I've got it temporarily coupled up to a nice old brake van I restored some time ago.

Done in double quick time as well mate.

Nice fabrication on the roof...looks factory fresh!

Wow, I though that would take as long as my Wilson piston fabrication mate
What a total transformation, and I know how keen you were for the full set
Great help from Nick, he provided some great pics with an L4 Latimer a while back as well.

Of course, the question remains.....does it run????
Hell yeah!

Very good, MooseMan! I like the GW toad you have there. Where did you get it, and who made it? I would like to get one to use in a mineral rake behind by GWR 43xx mogul.

When you have time if no trouble, some good pictures of the van would be appreciated

MooseMan

Is this OK John? Tell me if you need more.....
It's solid wood, with printed paper. Paul, I have no idea about the age or manufacturer, it came from eBay with a job lot of other O gauge bits. As I live right next to the old GWR in Cardiff I obviously fell in love with it

Thanks Moose, I like the looks of that one, a good companion for your 410
