Bowman gear

Large Bowman gear wanted to fit a Bowman M158, also the thread size for the burner and the thread size for the water level plug.
Mamodman123

I'm not very good with thread sizes.

You could replace the gear with a meccano one for now. I think Steve actually made one or two, maybe you can do the same?

I did think about making one, but haven't got the inclination to be honest.
Also thought of a meccano one and using that metalik in the short term.

It will fill the holes grey, that's the problem   and it's not dirt cheap either.

I could get it though work, and spray it for now.

Aye I suppose you could do that

Hi les,

The thread size for the Bowmans burner screw is BA 0 and BA 5 for the WLP.  Sorry can't help with the gear and your chances of getting one are very slim, as MM says your best bet is making one like steves did.  I can't find his thread on doing it at the moment, but if you PM him I'm sure he will give it to you.  Best of luck with it.

If you need to buy the BA taps  I can recommend these ones I bought from eBay seller rgd355, item number 320214598828, very cheap at GPB34.50 when I paid GPB 11 for just one BA 8 tap in OZ.

Cheers

Thanks for the thread sizes, and I have a set of BA taps and dies.
I do know yellow-jr got a gear off e-bay the other week, so they are out there.
I do remember reading Steves thread, but as I have no meccano, I will will keep looking.

Doesn't Chris mean the burner plug? and MF means the overflow flug?
Les Marsh

These are the items I need thread sizes for
Burner plug.

Water level plug.
MamodFan

I am sure the level pug is 6ba but I could be wrong

Try a Mamod safety valve in the bowman burner, if it screws in it is 1/4" BSF. The Early Bowman burners were definitely 1/4"

Just checked again with both my M135 and another, my M135 has sloppy threads and when I checked again the BA6 tap in the WLP collar was a better fit (I also tried with a BA6 screw) and BA0 v 1/4" BSF  for the burner collar are a close fit (both work).

I would go with MF's fitting sizes as he works with the material a lot more

That makes sense as the 0 ba thread is 25.4 tpi as apposed to 26tpi. The diameter is 0.35mm smaller than 1/4". So basically they are the same thread but the 0ba is slightly smaller.
These threads are a nightmare, I made a load of level plugs 5ba when they should have been 1/8" whit, you be surprised how 3 tpi difference makes the thread seize. Also such a large number of engines have loose threads it makes it difficult to establish exactly what they are. A proper minefield

I have just tried a Mamod s/v and it is a nice snug fit.

Thankyou. Thumbs up!
Les Marsh

Just bringing this back just in case any of our new members maybe able to help, or even if anyone else has found a gear and they are not using it.

Large Bowman gear wanted to fit a Bowman M158.

I agree completely with that.
Still haven't managed to figure out the thread size of the top half of the whistles from Renown engines. Its really hard to work out the TPI when you only have 4 turns of a thread.
