Bowman Grinder #831 – What should I do?See link here with picture of this little gem, it has a very heavy cast iron grinder body.
http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/about20985.html&highlight=
Today I got round to striping it down, cleaned and oiled all the parts, but only to find myself faced with a dilemma.
It quite plain to see someone in the past has taken a paintbrush to the base without removing the grinder. You can clearly see the different shades and finishes of red.
Originally I intended keeping it with its original patina, but now I have discovered this I am wondering if I should re spray the base on its own as its been hand painted already> I would of course leave the grinder itself alone with just a light oiling.
What do you guys think? what would you do

I was wondering at first if it was fading/ sunlight changes, but looking at the grinder base you can see where the paint has got onto that as well
I think its probably best to start again, even trying to get the old paint back wont be helpful as theres been quite a lot of paintloss on the base already

I would repaint the base Steve.
I've had great success by giving the original paint a quick rub with some TCut, to remove oxidation, then matching the colour at Halfords.
I've got it so close on occasion, that I've been able to spray a base and mask off what was left of the decal without it showing.
This was the scorched base before I started,

I think I am heading that way Sandy, and as you guys have pointed out the re paint is already starting to rust.
Do you think I sould give it this treatment_

or will it look funny the old and the new?

To be honest Steve, I always go for the best finish, even if it's a partial resto, so yes, give it the treatment mate. With a finish like that, no one will look at the rest anyway.
It soon dulls back to a more acceptable match as time goes by.

I would go full out restoration, fix/ repaint anything that you can.

I would repaint the whole thing Steve, as it has been buggered with already and as noted is rusting.
I recall the lovely job you did on that Bing (Doll?) generator last year...it was gorgeous and this one could be it's match.

I have thought about doing the whole thing Roger, but I cant see a way of getting the shaft out to relase the Fly Wheel and Grinder Wheel.
The shaft is brass I think and seems to be fused in to the Fly & Grind wheel somehow!
There is a link to my Bowman Genarator restorastion higher up this tread by the way.

Repaint the base but leave the grinder itself alone
You will never get the pinstripping right again (too thin)
Also the black paint seems to me in a very good state!

I think you are right, that pinstripping is very delicate.

I'd say repaint it Steve....these models originally had a very distinguished looking black pinstripe on the base edges as well, maybe you can reinstate it while you're at it - see pic of two of mine:

I'd have no hesitation in re-doing the base given it has been done before.
I would leave the rest though

The original paint in the base is gone so repaint the base and leave the rest alone.

I would repaint the base only, I would not touch the grinder at all exept for carefully removing the traces of red paint on there.

Right it’s all decided then...
I have striped the base down to its bare metal and it’s already had two coats of undercoat.
The Grinder will stay, as it is with a bit more cleaning to renmove traces of the old red paint.
Watch this space..
