Bowman Luton Snipe restoration

Finally gotten around to doing work on my Bowman Luton Snipe....when I got it it was extremely dirty, had been crudely repainted with a lot of the new paint flaking off, and was missing several small parts, like the engine main bearing, rudder, one of the windscreen vents, the rear deck....quite a little list. The brasswork was fine, but all the metalwork was badly corroded. It looked like this:

I've now done a repaint to original specification, using John Chapman's splendid boat as an example - thanks John! The engine bearing was made by first finding the right size bolt, and then very carefully drilling a hole straight through it. The rear deck was cut from a piece of mahogany. Still a few bits to do, mainly plumbing, but we're getting there. Made the rudder (not visible) out of some sheet brass. The hull was re-glued as well, as a lot of the original adhesive had perished.

The hardest bit was getting the colour right! The cream lacquer I bought was much too white, so I ended up mixing it with some dark varnish....this gave me the right colour, but made it quite thick and hard to brush on, so I used lots of thin coats, sanding them down inbetween. I'm very pleased with the end result, as it gave me that nice thick "lacquer shell" effect you find on the Bowman boats.

Anyway, yer 'tez:

Wow, that looks fantastic! Very nice job... what a transformation, it looks like new. I'll be very interested to see it running.
tmuir

Come up nicely Moose and just in time for the new year.
IndianaRog

Odilon,

Your woodworking and delicate painting skills are well demonstrated here...that turned out to be quite a stunner and I love the look of the overall paint scheme...you got it just right!!
Atticman

Wow , thats great, especially admire the wood, that really looks original, well done
johnreid

That looks like a Museum piece, quite well done.
MooseMan

Wow, thank you all!

Another one I couldn't have done without the help of the toy steam community!
MTA

You have certainly worked your magic on that one Moose! I particularly like the brass air vents (?) on the spray hood, more appealing to me than just simple holes drilled into it
Bogstandard

Lovely piece of restoration Odilon.
Another one rescued for future generations to appreciate.

John

Another boat brought back to life. Now lets see it in the water. Come on, New Years Day, got to be right for a trip to the park and a play with a boat or two, or three, or four.....
Cranko

You have made a brilliant job there Moose , well Done mate
MooseMan

Thank you all - I ffeel thoroughly buttered up with all that praise!

Still need to do a few things - reinstate the plumbing, make a new propshaft, test the burner - a few hours worjk, but I guess this boat won't be going in the pond for a few weeks yet....I also want to give the paint a chance to fully harden out.
Mamodman123

Pictures won't load for me
Andy

well done mate
toxx

... aye, that's it, Moose! Well done, sir!!!
erikl

Great job Odilon! I like the detailed paintwork on the engine piece!
Did you clean up the metal piece at the front of the boat? or did you replace it with a new piece?
Sandman

Just caught up with this thread Odilon.

Jeez mate what a cracking job.

Once again you've proved that with a bit of patience and know how, miracles of resurrection can take place.

Gives us all inspiration.

Erik, it's a cleanup job - went over it with some very fine wire wool and metal polish to get rid of the white deposits, and knocked out the worst of the dents. The replacement for the brass vent is my first attempt at metal shaping - I cut a shaper out of a bit of hardwood, annealed some brass sheet and tapped it around it. It looks OK as long as you don't get closeup.
Griffin

Bit late seeing this one, but what a nice job you have done on that one Moose.

Really like the paintwork, you have managed to gain that period look to it.  As usual, the woodworking is also first rate.

Not yet mate, but it's next on the list....I think I'll stick with the blue on this occasion
MooseMan

All finished now - here is some video of it running in on the sink.

Steve_S

That's great... it should be quick in the water!
mogogear

Moose- great video- I have not even picked up my first stationary and now you have me dreaming of a boat.... ... I can;t say I have much interest in traction steamers but a boat is a whole other kettle of fish..

I have looked for a Miss England Pop Pop boat but the $200 USD price tag has scared me... A nice old wooden boat might be fun...

Oh well more dreams to dream-- Nice work
Nick

Get a $5 pop pop boat. Then build a boat after that.
mogogear

I have a $5 pop pop boat......_ Yeah its alright...I guess.  I like projects... So I will be busy scouring the old antique stores and second hand shops ... and CRAIGSLIST always on the prowl...

There is a Mis England that was on ebay in France......New in original box- It is a sweet little tin boat...

This the second one this  I have seen the seller have in the last month. This one went for $350 USD !!!

Nice Pop Pop Boat .....  Nite!!
Wallace

Wow, that would be great to have if I could spare the money
Les Marsh

I've got two Pop-pops.
tmuir

The Miss England is about one of the most sought after and expensive putt putt boats around, but they do look cool.
Nick

That Miss England looks fast just sitting there, it is very nice looking.
MTA

Moose, yet again another top notch restoration. After seeing all the Bowman, Mamod, and Luton boats running so well I think I am going to have to get one now
Steve_S

There was a Miss England on eBay UK recently and it went for about £65 I think. I thought it would do much better than that.
rangerssteamtoys

Wow, really nice restoration.

When I saw this on ebay, and pointed it out to you I had no idea what you were going to do with it.

Very nice. WHERE IS THE VIDEO
evramsing

Holy Schlamoly!

That's really sweet!  I'm thinking of changing my emphasis and going over to boats!  Where do I find a junker?
