Bowman M122 cleanup

Since I'm almost finished with my restoration of the Mamod SE3 G&G (just waiting for a new whistle) I started with the cleanup of my Bowman m122.

I've decided not to paint anything, not even the firebox.
Let's start with a before pic:

It's not in very bad shape

It came apart in quite a lot of bits:

A lot more bits than a mamod
The cylinders are also quite a lot bigger than the mamod cylinders.

Next thing to do is get everything cleaned with brasso (I hope I'm not running out of it)

Superb engine Erik!

That is very very nice Erik! Thats the best original conditon one Ive seen . Should be a cracker when its finished
Griffin

That is a lovely engine, carn't wait for the finished pics.
Steve_S

That's a great engine Erik... I'm very jealous!

The cleanup of this engine is almost complete, but i'm having some dificulties putting it back together again.
I can't seem to get the screws together with the spings on the cylinders. Any tips how to do this?

It's tricky! 3 arms help
James

You can have my one in a pot, there you go, 3 arms

Great engine mate!
Chris

TWANG and off they shoot across the room.

Only thing I found that works so far is persistence. Could do with some form of jig to compress the spring while you screw the cylinders on.

I do it by pulling the spring back onto the pin with my left index finger nail, and then screw the nut on with my right hand. You need strong nails for that though.
SPOKESMAN

They are tricky to put back Erik - especailly the inside cylinder.

How's the clean up looking?

It's starting to look good, almost finisched now (I will post pics when I'm done)

I got the little springs on now, with a lot of fidling. They are a lottioghter than with the mamods.

Yes they are tighter! I found the best way was to get the cylinder port face loosesly screw into the frames and the spring trunnion screwed in tightish and then slide the covers on!

I still needed to post the "after" pics:

I've repaired the missing pice to the chiney this way:

It's a piece of Heat shrink tubing. It doesn't look very beautiful, but it works great! It's got quite a dent in it now, but it gets softer once it's getting hot.
IndianaRog

Beautiful job of it Erik, you have brass polishing down to an art!!

I liked your shrink tube fitting to the exhaust, that is such useful stuff!
Sandman

Great job Erik.

Very impressive engine.

I need one for my collection.

Hope it's as good as yours.
Wallace

Looks great great Erik.

Job well done. I would be very proud of that
erikl

Thanks guys, 've kept this engine totaly original (as one of the few originals in my collection )
I've thought about repainting the firebox, but since the rest is original, I figured I'd better keep it like this.
Steve_S

It looks really good Erik, you've done a fantastic job there!
