Bowman M135 VideoWith the impending arrival of an M101 I thought I would sort out the troublesome M135 I bought off ebay a while back. The main problem being it wants to run backwards rather than forwards . Last time i ran it, was at STIA and it exploded over me, James and Sandy's collection and ran without a burner
Anyway, I asked Moosey about it. He suggested a blocked pipe, well the steam pipe was partially blocked so I resoldered it and made sure it was fully unblocked. All I had to do now was fire it. oohh, I removed the cylinder cover so I could see what was going on! and the oiler, because I couldn't be bothered to stick it back on
It ran well.... the usual firemans hose from the start, but after a couple of minutes it was running really really well . Better than ever before, so I've done something right I suppose
Pictures of the run:
The video of the run, you can hear it prime a bit in the first few seconds . I've got some brass pipe so i will stick that on for exhaust to chimney, although i'm worried the chimney will flood
So all in all it went pretty well. I'm going to stick the cover back on tomorrow and try it again, hopefully I don't disturb anything along the way especially now it runs well.
Hopefully the 101 will peform well but i'm not counting my chickens just yet! at least the M135 is ready for STIA next year keep your engines at a safe distance

The Bomb-man! That crapper got my eye
Look really stupid with no cylinder cover. Really weedy and pathetic IMHO.

Aye the legendary exploding Bomb-man
Does look weedy without the cover, but it's a pain to put on!. I think it looks incomplete and quite cheap I hope the M101 looks better without one

Yep, don't look right AT ALL.
I used to think they were slide valve engines

No they put a brass cover on to hide the cheaply made cylinder quite clever really

Aye it is!
Look crap without them

MM...little tip I found worked a treat with my E101. It came with a short section of brass tubing that extends the copper exhaust pipe into the chimney...the copper sliding inside the brass for 1/2 inch or so...just a friction fit. Problem was it kept leaking from that joint as concensate would run back down the brass pipe and leak out there. Found a short bit of electrical "shrink tubing" meant to seal wire junctions did the trick perfectly...even self sealed. Normally you have to heat that stuff with a match or hair dryer and it shrinks by about 1/3 in diameter sealing the wire joint. In this case, I ran the engine and the shrinking occured almost instantly as the hot exhaust passed through it. It sealed perfectly, no back dripping yet it can easily be removed with a razor blade. You get shrink tubing at places like Radio Shack...just need a piece that will slide snugly over the larger of the two pieces being sealed...it will shrink tightly to both.
Another trick...to prevent condensate running out the bottom of the chimney, get a rubber stopper from a hardware store that fits the chimney's bottom...just stick it in and it's invisible, but seals the bottom and allows condensate to fill all the way up to where the exhaust tube goes in before it leaks out...2-3 runs can easily be done, then you just turn the whole thing upside down to drain out the condensate...works beautifully and no soldering or damage done to the chimney...just put a bung in it!!
cheers,
Rog

Good engine MM, and Im safe from any water splashes this time . . . .

That's the way it should run MM.
It's got that deep Bowman purrrrr that's so distinct.
Now, get its cylinder covers back on.
It's naked, poor bugger.

Thing is when you put the cylinder cover back on it wants to go backwards again

Sounds like it may be pushing the trunnion bolt.
The retaining screws on the cover need to be loose and allow the cover to slide all the way on.
Curious!

Maybe i pushed it on too far?

MAYBE MM, SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING IS SNARING THE CYLINDER MOVEMENT!

Nice runner, MM. You'll get the cylinder cover/backward running phenomenon sorted!

SORTED!
I just took it all apart again and just made a few slight adjustments and it worked
Although it exploded again when it ran, it ran well. I didn't catch it on camera unfortunatly it happened a few seconds after I stopped it . I attached some tools 'n' stuff to test the power
The video, as I said missed it exploding by a couple of seconds. The safety valves are very very unpredictable. Shame I can't stuff a Mamod one in there. Enjoy!

i remember when it exploded
drive band slack mm
execellent runner though makes a purring sound

MM, you can prevent the exploding in a couple of ways - firstly, don't fill up the boiler too much - I put in 125cc of water, that's plenty. You can also put a washer in the safety valve, that tend to soften the action a little bit.

Cheers Moosey! I thought, the pressure is too much and I can't relieve it. Could do with a whistle, but i'll fill less next time.
How does it compare to yours Moose? I think it's running better than it ever has done now one of my favourites!

its best to screw things down but that takes ages and sometimes you just cba

MM what is actually exploding? The water when you unscrew the safety valve?
If so can't the pressure be relased slowly by pushing the cylinder away from the block?

During the run the valve pops up and gushes water everywhere, you can't get to the cylinder when the cover is on. The boiler is too big for the psiton I think, they don't run fast enough!

It's spot on MM - that's how a 135 should run. Should be capable of a fair bit of work too. Lovely engine!

Ok I get it now. Certainly an annoying problem.
Kinda a catch 22 situation too. Cos water boils at higher temps when under higher pressure.
So when it's boiling, whilst running, and the safety valve releases, well that releases slight pressure, but in turn suddenly causes the water to boil more violently.
Good luck with it though. Nice engine

All I have to do is fill it less and it should be ok!
It's just quite random when it goes off, if you are near it then you get hit

Yup! not sure what the problem was... but it's now gone it was a bit of a fluke fix... but i'll settle for that
