Bowman M140

My M140 arrived today - very pleased with it. Needs a damn good clean and lube. All there though - engine, chimney, filler funnel, box, burner and instructions! Will post up 'before' pics soon.

Just dismantling it now. Want it clean and ready to steam at STIA like SMs!
SPOKESMAN

First pics. Engine is in bits already - no shocks or surprises, which is good after the '67 Dulux SR1a. Needs a good clean, idling gear unseizing and a lot of old laquer on the boiler removing. I have some pipework in the workshop so might rig up a removeable exhaust pipe. Not sure if the M140s had them? The removeable chimney has a hole for one. Any ideas chaps?

tmuir

Looks a bit dirty at the moment but has tonnes of potential

Loads!
Manxman

I can see that is going to be a very nice model. Well done Mike. Another brill addition to your collection.

Lewis

like the 2 mini cylinder set up
Sandman

That will polish up a treat Mike, and at a fraction of what mine cost.

Great decal.

A real shrewd buy.

Lucky Id say. What you you think about putting a removeable exhaust pipe on it?

Lew it the smallest twin I have.

So for twins I have an SP5old, SP5 new, SE3, M122 and the M140.
Griffin

Very nice indeed, will clean up a treat.

All complete too, a real added bonus.

Glad you are pleased with it Mike, it kind of restores ones confidence in ebay. Especially after a let down, like you had with the SR.

Look forward to the finished results on both engines

It's funny, but I'm so impressed and familiar with your work that
I'm envious how it will end up looking BEFORE you even touch it!

It's just how you like to find them...you know it's a diamond yet
it's roughness keeps the price reasonable. If I recall correctly, you
got this at a great price.

£62.

OH! The outrage!!
Mamodman123

Very nice model Mike! I guess the hole in the chimney was for exhaust possibly on another model?

Aye the M158.

Yep. It's on mine too.

Nice

It looks great Mike... and I'm sure its going to look better! Regarding the exhaust, I've never seen an exhaust pipe leading to the chimney on a 140, and I've collected pictures of lots of them. As you say its the same chimney as the M158, but on the 140 it seems to have been only for show. To use the chimney it would have had to have a pipework arrangement similar to the M122, but that never seems to be fitted.

Thanks Steve ans SM - I may fit some - I have a spare length of copper tube, taper the ends and insert in to the exhaust ports. Still polishing at the moment - the boiler has very heavy oxidation - been cleaning it for 3 hours on and off.

Managed to free the seized gear wheel from the sounter shaft by letting some oil penetrate the the two.
SPOKESMAN

A few pics of the M140 - sorry the flash makes marks and any rust look 10 times worse. I have endeavoured to keep all orignal paint.
Expect a steaming soon . . .

SPOKESMAN

For comparison . . .

The hardest I have ever had to polish a boiler . . . . this took 4 hours.

Mamodman123

Very nice Job Mike! Looks a lot better now! As for the 4 hours Ive done worse Once had this SE1a that was just total black!!!!!

Don't forget your camera Mike . MAke sure the safety valve doesn't leak this time

Beautiful Mike. Really classy engine. I've never seen a Bowman in the flesh, so I'm really looking forward to this one.
Griffin

Very nice indeed, as always top stuff.

Mike, what did you clean the paintwork with?
Sandman

Very nice job Mike. Your's was a lot worse than mine corosion wise.

You've worked wonders there. It will be great to compare notes at the STIA.

Just been looking at the base. I wonder what causes those little isolated chips in the paintwork.

They go right through to the base metal. Mine is the same.

Do you think it has something to do with the heat and hot liquids
being spat out, or just plain wear and tear??

Anyway, a sterling job mate and another engine saved.

Light scrubbing with water and washing up liquid!

Wear and tear SM, knocks, Meccano marks maybe and rubbing and handling.

Yes I think your right Mike.

I tend to forget just how old these engines are and the fact that they are toys which have a darned hard life.

Just shows the quality that was built in to be able to function perfectly after all this time.

You can't beat a bit of Bowman.
SPOKESMAN

Aye!! get one you need another. I really fancy an M130.

I bid on one recently, got the M122 instead. The M130 (135 with a dynamo and shorter stroke) went for 186.

A lot of of dosh, but a cracker of a machine.

It's what it's worth to you that counts.

Thing is when you really want something how do you price it??
SPOKESMAN

Maybe a 158 next . . .
Sandman

Maybe just maybe.

They tell me that there might be some bargains at the STIA.

I kind of wonder as everyone will be looking and most will know their onions.
SPOKESMAN

You never know, I really need some oilers x2, wicks, Bowman end plug, odds and ends oh and a SE4 burner rather than an engine . . ..
Sandman

Jeez. I never thought of that.

I could do with a few spares myself.

Smart thinking mate.
SPOKESMAN

Just steamed the M140 - went very well, trunnions need a little loosening - apart from that it ran suprbly - nearly 20 minutes. Pics and vids up soon.

Good to see.
