Brown Sauce on boilersas some of you may know i bought that rather sorry looking se2 with the incredibly tarnished boiler, i read on the web that tomato sauce is good due to its mild acidity, so not having any i tried brown sauce and low and behold the crap started to come off with the help of a toothbrush. Revealing clean shiny brass underneath.
I wondered if anyone else has used this method?

sainsburys cheapest brand i have the bottle here:
Water,Glucose,Fructose, syrup, molasses, maize starch, date paste, tomato paste, apple, acetic acid, soy sauce, salt, and barley malt extract
leave for a bit rinse and then brasso the difference is striking

I'll bet it's the acetic acid that does the job.
And the consistency of the sauce keeps it in place while it's working.
I'm off to the kitchen to see if we've got some!
Great tip!!

I used the brown sauce method on an old Primus blow lamp a good few years ago. Worked a treat.

yes its the acid and salt that does the cleaning. also ........ salt water from the sea is good.!! on copper and brass .(well our local sea works and people swim in it!!!) a mix of salt and vinegar works as well. these are cleaners that remove tarnish but doesnt POLISH. there is a difference between a tarnish remover and a polish. generally if brasso doesnt clean it i use some sort of acid what ever i can find.. hydrochloric...phospheric (rust converter) on old brass sometimes i make a "pickle " ...salt and vinegar with a drop of rust converter and water . the brass and copper go totally black... this is washed off. then hit it with brasso and if you like apply a coat of lacquer

It will be interesting to see the pics.
I have used the salt and vinegar method that XL spoke of, and that works well too.
But it never shifted old burnt lacquer. Only thing that has done that for me is a wadding called Brite Shine. It has a caution not to use on lacquered surfaces, so I tried it and it worked

A bit off-topic...
I heard once such a thing. A convict used the chilli sauce (or something similar) served in his lunch and put it on the bars of his holding cell. Guess what happened
Yes, he did escape successfully.

One don't stop to get surprised over to what extent things can work in other areas then intended.
I wonder what the brown note can do?
Edit: Sorry for the poor joke, my "humor" derail sometimes...
