Burnac Vulcan sight glassJust been giving my Vulcan a good once over with Autosol ... excellent for removing grim and stuff, but I want to clean the boiler in the region of the sight glass. Having never taken apart a slight glass, can anyone with Vulcan experience describe what I might find when I undo the screws ... and how/what to check to make sure the sight glass is still functional.
Many thanks

I took my Bing Engine's sightglass off to make a picture.
This is better than my confusing explanations in english
Pics will follow in a few minutes

Well, now...
Unscrew the screws ant take it slowly off....use oil to make it easier.
Just check if the water tbe has no cracks.
And renew the seals!

Thanks for the photos. Luckily, the sight glass on mine is just a slice of glass, located flush behind the frame, that has snapped in two. Should be easier to replace then a bent glass tube.

Yes, then it is easier....
To bend that pipe to fit in is really nasty

There were two types of sight glass used on Burnac engines. One being identical to the Bing version in Mirko's pictures. There has been some speculation as to whether surplus Bing parts were used. Unfortunately not much is known about Burnac's.

Sight glasses-To all concerned,
Useful topic this,
Please would you keep us informed of progress and how you get on - I have a Burnack and had nightmares at the thought of this sight glass.
Not exactly the sort of thing you can call into steam toys r us and get off the shelf!!
Good luck with it

Hi,
Here is a close up image of the sight glass removed from my Vulcan.
The seal is made from leather but as you can see, it's not in the best of health. The glass slice looks like it is a rough cut rather then a piece of precision cut glass and is broken into two parts. Pretty simple assembly compared to the glass tube arrangement. Just wondering if the Vulcans were supposed to have glass tubes.

Not an expert i'm afraid, but it looks like it should be glass and not a tube

Shouldn't be too hard to fix, much easier than the tube kind.
The Burnac comes in a few variations - one with your type sight glass and one with the Bing style sight tube. I'm currently repairing a sight glass tube on a Marklin and it's a right royal pain in the....

As I said earlier there were two types of sight glasses on Burnacs. One was very Bing like with a curved glass tube, and the other with a flat glass. From the picture yours is the type with a flat glass. Maybe a replacement could be made from a microscope slide?

Great idea John.
I was just saying on another thread how we have learned to adapt totally unconnected objects to suit our quest for spare parts.
It's amazing what turns up on engines.

Another quick question. Now I've got some glass (and some perspex) of the right size, what is the best way to seal the sight glass holder against the side of the boiler? The original leather seal is ... err ... functionally challanged. Would several layers of thin gasket paper be ok or should I use the silicon sealant? Any other suggestions or pointers would be very helpful. Thanks
