Burner question (disaster)do you have to have gauze on top of a meths burner? what would happen if you just filled a dish with meths and lit it? I am going to make a meths burner for my D16 in case you're wondering.

I used to use an old metal bottle cap of a glass coke bottle (This is before the plastic bottles were invented) filled full of meths.
It burned ok but is not recommended because if it get too hot the meths can spill out and create a burning river. It also creates a lot of soot as it doesn't burn cleanly.
The mesh ensures only vaporised meths burns which is safer and cuts back on soot too.

THe idea is to burn the fumes not the liquid, thus the need for the gause

That did not go well. let me just say, thank GOD I had a fire extinguisher on hand.

not funny. OK, well, sort of funny, for you. no damages though. except for having to clean up that crap that came out of the fire extinguisher. It did it's job though!

Water works well on Alcohol fires too. Fire extinguisher dust is the worst there is.,

Next time have a damp towel handy and just set it on top of the flame.

It went that bad!

the burner tipped over, while lit, and spilled flaming alcohol all over the (thanks god) aluminum foil sheet I had set under the burner.

If no video then how about some pictures.

get one! I keep one in my room at all times since I just 'bout blew up a battery. wired it in series with a 30V laptop power supply to a heater. Duh! remember, current always takes the path of least resistance. (the 30V would rather flow back into a 9V battery than through a heater.) BTW, this incident had nothing to do with steam engines.

I did make a successful burner just now though! Lord knows what engine it'll fit! anyway, I took one of those tiny jars you get jam in at the fancy hotels, poked holes in the metal top, stretched yarn between the two holes, let it dangle into the alcohol, soak it up, put the cap on, and light it! it works fine! this could be a replacement burner for old verticals? I'll post a pic...

It seems to have had nothing to do with common sense either !

Ace, don't want to sound like just another old fart telling you to be careful, but dang, you seem to gravitate to the dangerous side of life. We all did as kids, but sounds like your battery episode and now this glass Molotov Cocktail are serious enough to cause a real fire and maybe burn home, hearth and family.
BE CAREFUL, PLEASE!!!

I think I'll be scared to light a meths burner for awhile, so don't you worry roger!

There may be more to the mesh than you think... A flame cannot travel through a small hole below a certain diameter - like in a mesh for example. This means that the flame will only burn above the mesh, and only on the vapourised meths that the heat of the flame causes to be evapourated and pushed through the mesh.
It is also the principle behind the old Davey Safety Lamp used in mines - there was mesh both above and below the flame, so if there was some flammable gas accidently found in the mine, the flame from the lamp would not set it all off!!!
