Can anyone pick up a launch from Scarborough for me?I'm looking at a potential purchase, collection only, requiring pick up from Scarborough.
This is it,
http://www.westbourne-models.com/...k%252Fmarten-howes-%26-baylis.htm
It's completely built, with the Anton Cristal Steam Plant, and RC.
It's 45" long.
I'm more than willing to cover all expenses, gas, etc.
Whoever picks it up would have custody of it until I next come to UK to pick it up.
Please PM me if you can help,

Ranger, some folks simply WON'T ship period....either because the item is big and fragile and they don't want to be responsible for it getting damaged...and/or they won't ship outside the country they live in, not wanting to complete the customs form.
I always cringe when folks list something on eBay but won't ship outside their country of origin...it's a 2 minute procedure to complete the customs form if that and opening things up to the world usually nets you a higher price.

That particular item, I would be afraid to pack myself.
I would have to make a custom carton for it if I owned it just to transport from home to the water.

Here in the states, auction houses will have UPS come in to pack and ship. Wasn't too expensive recently when I won an item. I would contact a local branch of a shipping company in the UK.

Another option is to hire a Mover, similar to Mayflower in the US, but there is a risk there too.

Me too. Damage is definitely the issue here. I'm still wondering how I'm going to pack it to get it back here. It will have to held in some kind of frame that allows no movement at all and allows for the box to be placed, or even dropped in any orientation.
If you've ever watched baggage being unloaded from a plane you'll know what it will have to withstand.
The seller has offered to crate and ship if I buy both his M,H & B, Boats. This is the other one:

I am really pushing it with Topaz. Both is out of the question. Topaz is a fantasy of mine and I can't imagine when I'll get another opportunity like this.
I really like the COD idea. I'm a little nervous about sending someone I don't know, this kind of money.

Too bad someone else on the forum doesnt want the other. You might have to twist Mos' arm

55" long
That's just the kit, no steam plant etc.

I doubt that would even fit in my car

I would think that a Fiesta would be at least 45" wide in the back seat.

OK. I have an extremely generous Forum member who has volunteered to do the pick up.
I now have only to finalize things with the seller and a dream will come true.

Whoever it is.... keep the boat. OR just ship it over there by putting it in the water. Pointing it toward the virgin islands, and steam away

Lets hope it's meant to be.

It's done.
A sale has been agreed. Just have to make the financial arrangements and the pick up can take place.

Sorry Richard, it’s a long way for me otherwise I would get it for you with pleasure.

May I ask who is picking it up? They will be respected and have great honor thrust upon them.
If its confidential then just say that.

He could not find me Well if he came to my town all he would have to say is "where is the kid that plays with steam engines?"
I'm the only one of my kind around here.

I don't think it's confidential, but it would be courteous of me to ask their permission first.

Steve_S from Leeds has very generously agreed to drive to Scarborough to collect Topaz on my behalf.
I cannot thank him enough for all that he is doing. The seller is making an instructional DVD and will give Steve a live demonstration on his local pond.
I am still thinking about how I can repay him for his kindness.

A fine choice, I have so admired Steves ingenuity too. I do not think you will regret this at all.

I figured it was him, I saw that he was from Leeds. So I came to the right conclusion.
To pay him back you let him keep it for about a week. He can take it out on a pond or something

He may have custody of it for a lot longer than that.
I don't know when I'm next coming to UK.
Certainly won't be before Monday.
Likely dates are September, for my father's birthday, or February, for STIA.
He will of course be welcome to sail her if he wishes. Bearing in mind her value he will have to exercise discretion on location and conditions.
And video will be mandatory.

ANd take an inurance policy on the boat first incase the wost happens.
ARe you getting the plans for the hull?
That way you could use the hull contours to make a frame to sit the boat on.
I bet you can't wait to get to the UK now.

Richard glad to hear you got it sorted out in the end.
At that price is the displayed boat stand not included as well?

I believe Tony was thinking about a frame for shipping the boat, still a big part of the problem.

Yes that's what I was thinking.
I can also see a large amount of foam beads playing a big part too.

I don't think I'll dare to sneeze near it, never mind steam it!
But, we'll see. I can imagine that there'll be good forum crowd around the STIA pond in February......

Everything is included. The seller sent me a long list. Everything from plans to gas tank adapters and of course the stand.

Working on a crate design. My current plan is to make a masonite, (hardboard), crate stiffened with hardwood strips pieces on the edges and uprights along it's length on the perimeter.
I will then wrap the hull in plastic and fill the bottom half of the crate with low expansion foam. The area between the foam and the masonite, the strip depth, would be filled with a cushioning material.
Cushioned hardwood strips would run horizontally across the deck between the uprights preventing any movement. These would also be braced back to the sides near the top of the crate.
Loose parts will be removed and packed separately. The balance of the crate will be packed with cushioning material.
I intend to ask Steve to send me the full size plans and I will build most of the crate here. Will test run it on the way over.
