I am no expert but I would suggest a idler pulley with raised sides

Bernie, do you have genuine Meccano chain, I bought some new chain recently for a really good price only to find the links were just slightly shorter. Worked fine on smaller sprockets but were not long enough to wrap properly on larger sprockets.

I bought some type 25 roller chain and sprockets for a R/C project. The chain is strong and cheap, so are the sprockets. All the ones I bought have 1/4" holes with set screws.
