Chart Steam Models.

Page 11 in Basil Harley's "Toy Boats", Shire Album 193, shows the side wheel paddle boat "Old Trafford" made by Chart. I know they also made a launch.

Did they make any other steam models?

Did they build their own engines and boilers?

These boats have flat bottomed wooden hulls in the Bowman style and the launch is rather ordinary. "Old Trafford" has appeal though and with its slow speed is ideal for swimming along with. Worth buying one if you get the chance.

I do not have Basil 's book..could you scan and post a shot of the boat you discuss?
Les

It looks as if the steamline runs from the same housing as the safety valve.

Hey-I like that.....A little bit of gearing would help that little paddle steamer !! the small single  might struggle with the two large wheels...

course gearing to help the mechanical advantage  would really make it crawl along...slowly

great to hear from you again Murray, do you have an Old Trafford?

Chart Steam Models.

Yes I have an "Old Trafford". What doesn't show well in that photo is the 16:1 double reduction gearing between the engine and the paddle wheels. With that gearing the engine can rev and the paddles propel the boat at a nice speed for swimming alongside.

I have the launch Chart made, but it is unexciting.

Murray...don'tt be stingy--please show us!!!    Train

I would love to look at your paddler--the gearing sounds perfect!!

I don't think anyone here has ever shown or seen one...I visit over on Paddleducks form time to time  and I have never heard of your boat before!!

Thanks for your nice thread!

Mr John Reid...could you post a link to your tutorial on how to post pictures please? Yours is the most helpful!!

Thanks to Murray-I have found myself $10 poorer--I ordered a used copy of Basil's Toy Boats book.....

What do you think?? It is just mounted backwards!!

the symetry of the funnel and the engine is a winner.
