That was because he had close to $30 shipping listed in the auction, but I think you talked him down if I remember right.

You are correct sir!! Say the magic word and win a duck!!
But I did my best to pass on all the spoils at cost...It always pays to ask sellers about goofy shipping costs-- I goof up all the time when getting my shipping logged in and once someone bids- you can't change it!! Less people bidding against you with too high shipping costs showing in the auction.. kind of like good things in the wrong category

My Bowman M140 was £11, but it was just a collection of bits and pieces among some old Meccano, so it was a speculative eBay purchase. It payed off though because almost all of the parts were there.

Mine is definatly my recent purchase of the 1961 D12, including the M52 &M53. $50.00 US for all 3!!
Somehow, I figure it is unlikely that I will get a deal like that again.
I hope the next engine will be a Mamod.

My best buy in toy engines was a Jensen model 80 twin cylinder marine engine for $30.00 USD, after telling the owner the engine was worth more than his asking price. He told me off for "challenging his knowledge" of toy engine values, so I just shut up and bought it for what he was asking....(grin). So far we only know of 3 or 4 of them.

With an engine like the Jensen model 80, valuation is difficult at best. There is one in Washington DC, Gil has one, Randy Calhoun has one installed in a boat and a fourth one is in the hands of a Danish steam lover who received it as a gift from Tom Sr. after spending a summer visiting Jeannette, PA. It is the only model 80 known to have been sold, factory equipped, with a boiler and the ultra rare model 15 D AC/DC generator.
I can tell you that the one I had was easily sold for a satisfyingly plump 4 figure dollar amount. At the time I sold it, it was one of only two known specimens in the world. True value?.... we'll all have to await one actually selling on Ebay to really know.
