coal boiler helpi was wondering if on a verticle boiler, in the fire bit at the bottom, does it have to have a 2 layer bit, with water inbetween. like on bigger boilers.

Do you mean an inner and an outer firebox Andy?
I don't have much experience with vertical boilers, but I think you don't need them as the fire sits below the water.
With the water above it, it ALWAYS covers the fire.

yes i do si.
i was just wondering cos i thought the fire would effect one sheet of copper.

so long as there is water in the boiler no harm will come to the copper. to prove this you can boil water over a fire in a paper bag

so this would work
blue is the water
aorund the fire is just the tube, no water

uses wilesco cylinders, as we have a couple not in use.

an interesting concept. Assuming this is for 32mm how big would the grate area be, as coal firing is very difficult in this scale and is generaly left to the large locos. Also are you going for a single flue like me or making a true coal boiler

one centre flue, with cross bits, and about 4 smaller flues around the side.
as i have lost the drawing i cant tell you the grate area.
but coal fired de winton has been made and looks small

and TME do a small 32mm hunslet, that can be coal fired, and tis tiny.

4cm, but i i am going to make it bigger

Hi
I would spend some more effort and make the fire box watercovered.
In the end you will have a more efficient boiler.
To get a good fire, you will need a good blower.
you told something about wilesco-cylinders...
That means, that the boiler is rather small. (Something like 80 mm diameter and 200 mm heigth) In this dimension, its quite difficult to get a good fire. I think its best, to arrange a possibility to use a ceramic burner if it doesn't work with coal.

ok, thanks for that.
the boiler is 56mm wide, and 115mm tall inc fire box, about 75mm without firebox.
after seeing moosemans little engine kit, i think one of them is perfect for it, instead of the wilesco cylinders.

TME do a 16mm coal fired hunslet, and thats tiny, so a small fire must be possible.
i chose the dewinton because i thought it would be a fairly simple coal fired engine to make. i want a coal fired engine, i did think about converting my edrig to coal fired, but people at my local club didnt seem to help me out with anyinfo, and the company who used to do the coal conversion kits for edrig have stopped doing them and wont give out any plans.

a coal fired 16mm verticle boiler has been done before, and looks a similar size to mine
