coke engineI had an idea for a engine which involved a coke bottle, broken whistle, se2 and an angry teenager (me)
basically the engine works when the pressure produced from shaking a bottle of coke is transferred to a cylinder.
here is our engine to be
broken whistle
I then took the bottle cap and drilled a hole in it then with some washers and a screw I had this
I then took some plastic tubing
and my se2
and connected the engine to the bottle
when I tested it (with pop) I shaked it and realised that the seal had gone on the whistle and had to take the thing apart to replace it.
when I tested it the 2 time I could not get the flywheel to do a full turn on its own. The problem is the boiler by the time any pressure gets to the piston its gone because the boilers so big I am sure that if someone tried this with a stand alone cylinder it would work.
I hope someone else can build on this idea.

Once it is all gunked up with sugar, good luck in cleaning it out. I dont know about that one.

I dont know what you mean by sugar I just used the gasses it creates not the coke itself

so you might use vinegar and baking soda to produce Co2
Or really create some fiz-- add a Mento to a bottle and cap it quick... those Mentos videos on Utube always are a "GAS"
But I am thinking your going to get syrup in something even to a slight degree..but it your gear, have fun!

you see the problem with them ideas is that they would fizz foam into the boiler and possibly damage the engine.
and dont worry about me damaging the engine as I only did this to prove the concept and intend to buy a toy which has a cheap plastic cylinder I have seen in the shops to make the engine properly

You may as well attach some sort of pump to it

Thats true but I wanted to do something different and strange so I did this.

You will need a smaller cylinder, much smaller I suppose.
I think Lemonade is more 'fizzy' than coke, but don't quote me on that
Vinegar and bi-carb creates a good bit of gas as said above!

Soft mints, Polos, Extra Strongs will gove you MUCH more gas and Diet Coke Works Better than anything else

Try using diet Coke, no sugar - only Aspartame, no gumming up.

Thanks these are all great ideas but it wont really work unless I try it with a stand alone cylinder

Can't you make a very simple little engine out of some wooden dowel and some PVC pipe or something for this experiment?
Gunking up a decent stationary seems very silly! One way of getting more pop from your pop is adding a couple of mentos!

That wont be necessary as I only did it to prove the concept and washed out the stationary straight after even though no liquid went in the boiler.
I take good care of my engines

Here's another idea:
Why don't you get yourself a nice soda bottle?
I am thinking of the older types, where the gas is crated by screwing in a small cartridge with Co2 or whatever.
Then connect the plastic tube to the bottle and the tube with the boiler.
By pushing the bottle's lever you cal let out the gas and cut it off again.
Shouldn't that work good?

why?
Screw a cartridge in, plug in the rubber tube and that's it....

I'd love to see someone power my two engines by this!
I think its a very interesting idea, keep up the innovation.
A Jenny Wren would definitely run on this.

Glad to hear it!
Otherwise I might have had to ask one of our forum members closer to Middlesbrough to pop over and impound your steam toy collection and give you a slap for using them inappropriately!

well nothing is new here. ive spent some time on our french sister forum lately. one of the members there details a wonderful little engine which fascinated me. complete with vids he details how to build it. using a tube and plunger to mix vinegar and bi carb to power his little engine. it appears that a large range of french toys years ago used this method.perhaps this is a better way to go with this idea
