comment (steam related) made at the Boilerhouse- Qld in Oz

this was heard a while back-

1 of the senior steam club members was asked by a little boy recently- "If those engines run by steam, why do you need a fire?"
Graham-Jilly

very logical
tmuir

I remember James saying he once ran one of his engines to show other people at his school and was asked 'Where do they batteries go?'
James

Yeah LMFAO

There were this lad who was scared of germs... he is a real spanner. He is ALWAYS having digs at me, trying to get me into trouble. It was year 8, I took my TE1a into physics, lit it up, got it going, and he said "Is it hot? Can I touch it?"

I said you see the long green bit, the boiler? That's not hot. That's the cool bit you pick it up by.

He grabs hold of the boiler, while the engine is running

I've never laughed like it in all me life

It's the only way some people will learn mate

Sounds like a guy who used to work with me, and used to have 4 fingers and a thumb on one hand.
Now he doesn't work with me anymore, and has just one thumb, and maybe one finger on that hand

So have I
James

Seriously, this lad is wierd!!

He don't let anyone touch him, he's petrified of germs. He carries packets of Dettol wipes

He has his own "Personal space". His skin is yellow, like a Simpson aswell. He eats everything organic, he hates being outside, he bums computers and medieval wars, AND he can't even lift a plastic chair off the floor!!!!
Wallace

Yeah but he thought he was quicker than 3 mower blades

He wasn't, hence used to have 4 fingers and a thumb on one hand

James

LMFAO!!

Yeah mate. Our Rough Cutters at work, have a deck out the front of the mower, with 3 blades side by side.

Mechanic working on the mower, had the blades running.

This guy was that stupid, he said "reckon I can put my hand in and out of those blades real quick"

He was told not to be stupid, grow up etc etc.

So he tried

He was always doing stupid/dangerous stuff. That was his last stunt that I know of
James

I always do really really stupid stuff for dares and the likes, but if some bugger dared me to do that I'd tell em where to stick it
Wallace

But that's it James. You'd get dared, but say no.

He didn't even get dared Just did it for, umm, well I dunno.

Show off, for the buzz? Don't know. But at least he doesn't work for us anymore. That was one danger we didn't need
James

LMAO he just lopped his fingers off??

Good job you weren't eating sausage butties at the time
Wallace

Yeah, just like that

Sausage butties

I was lucky, I didn't see it, just heard all the commotion.
James

LMAO!!

Were he like crying?? Or were he stood there like a rate hardo?

going back to the original post ...

When me and my dad fired up the MM1 to see if it was OK, my husband looked a bit bemused. Later he said to me "Why do you want it if it doesn't work properly?" I said "It works fine - what do you mean?" and he said "But it didn't move... Don't you need tracks?" He had a quick lesson in the difference between an engine and a locomotive

My son keeps getting confused between a stationary steam engine and a loco too but hes's allowed hes only 2 1/2

But to be fair on any of my engines he can point out the boiler, safety valve, whistle and steam dome (if it has one).

I know the difference between a train and stationary engine
James

Same

A stationary engine is useful and nice to look at. Trains ain't

I got a few trains, they're ok to watch when they're going round once in a while! Aslong as they are steam though!

you won't catch me standing at the railway side with an anorak, thermos and note pad

I know, you told me you broke your thermos last week.
MooseMan

I had an email conversation through my website once with someone who couldn't get their engine to raise steam, so I wrote back asking him if he was using the right fuel. A few days later he wrote back saying that he'd fired the engine with everything he could lay his hands on, and that some of it had actually started to melt, but still no steam...

Only at this point did I think to ask if he'd put any water in....i guess you'll know the answer!

I've had to explain to several 30something people - slowly and patiently - that both fire and water are indeed necessary to make the little Steam Roller go 'round and 'round and that, no, it would be best if they kept their train-happy 2-year old far away from it while she watches rather than letting her come close.

In this day and age of cheap throwaway products and electronics, some people cannot comprehend a mobile object that is neither one, nor uses the other.
steamyjim

When i do shows with my engines, young kids always want to come in and look at the engines, but there parents seem to show know interest in what they want to do and drag them away. How will there learn about stuff if the have parents like that???
MooseMan

Not a problem either of my kids will ever have!
steamyjim

No, they would be draggin you away

This is why I took up steam,I was one of those kids who got a new rc toy and a week later it broke. Not just cause of me but their cheap junk. I would rather have a steam engine that will last almost forever than have a cheap rc toy that breaks in a week.I would rather spend my money on steam engines because they dont break in a week and they last forever. I would rather buy a few steam engines than buy about 100 rc cars that add up to the same price of steam engines but end up with about 10 leftover.
