Cretors on craigslist a scam

There is a Cretors popcorn wagon engine on craigslist.
This engine is owned by a good friend of mine and he has it for sale on ebay right now.

The only times I have heard of "Craigslist" have been on here when people are warning of scams.
Maybe time Craig got it sorted - who is Craig?

They are just free classified ads - organized my cities . states and country. They were originated by the techies in the San Fransisco Bay area for job networking..I could be off some what but that is it.

I have used them with great success for buying and selling many a collectible espresso machine , to finding my buy of the century on my lathe and tooling and Thule storage box for my car to getting rid of all sorts of things.

They( CL) do promote "face to face " sales encounters and warn of scammers. This does make it a challenge when I find a steam engine out of state that i want to buy. Like anything - a phone call to size each other up is always in order, exercise common sense and when you intuition says " something is wrong" --listen .

Your point is correct. He( the seller) was laying in wait for a long distance person to take a chance and paypal some money to hold a fictitious engine... any local buyer would obviously not buy what was not there..

as is in all the world - caveat emptor

I think you have summed up Craigs List well.  I too have enjoyed great success on both buys and sells of misc. items this past year using Craigs List, but all were face to face transactions.  Without the chance to size up a long distance seller, I can see many a person getting easily duped out of funds as evidenced by the guy Gil pointed out with the bogus Cretors for sale.

eBay seemed to have cleaned out most of the bogus sellers of a few years ago, but they are a pay as you go system with funding to do more security checks.  Craigs List is a free system run by a very small staff out of a house in San Francisco...you get what you pay for!!!

very interesting..... however.... is this possible??? .....ive seen this on ebay..... it maybe intended to buy this engine (by the craiglist seller) from the ebay seller and sell it on via craigslist and maybe bag a profit ????? its not exactly a scam (unless the craiglist seller accepts payment without coming up with the goods!) i mean ...why use a jensen dealer when you can buy direct from jensen??????isnt a dealer bagging a profit by getting a product from jensen and selling it on for a profit!!!how many dealers sell from a catologue????? without actually having the stock???? " oh.....i can get that for you"  same book ...different cover!.....scam???????

Glenn, the way these scammers work is they steal the words, photos etc. from a legitimate auction...in this case on eBay.  Sometimes they steal the EXACT words and photos.

Then they list it on a completely different system like Craigs List which is nothing more than a free classified advertisement.  Scammer is implying he has what he is representing in the ad, but his goal is to attract a seller too far away to drive and see/trade money face to face.  In this case scammer usually wants money sent by Western Union...once the money is sent, scammer disappears and buyer only realizes he's been had when nothing ever arrives for his payment.

I hate to see this sort of thing happen with Craigs List...it almost ruined eBay a few years ago with scammers out of China holding bogus auctions ON eBay, often using text and photos from an auction that had ended months earlier...they were bold and there were plenty of them.  Ebay seems pretty much cleaned up now, so I guess these scammers have moved on to more fertile territory!

This is nothing more than "phishing" and trolling for someone who would pounce with some money to "hold" the item..Craigslist is rife with people who say they will show up and never do. And deals from people who just don't want to go through the "hassle" to set up a paypal account  and actually put a auction in the works are best grabbed quickly. So folks can jump too fast to "hold" a desirable item. I think that was the ruse here.

That is why there are many legitimate deals to be found by people that may not know the worth of certain items and just want to sell things quickly to a person that will pick up the item.  

As a quick example, I think I showed this a long time ago - My old Atlas 618 lathe - with more tooling that you would believe - milling  attachment , 2 chucks each with 2 sets of jaws, 30+ piece set of reamers, commutator chuck, boring bars , countless cutting bits, dial indicators, DRO, tooling vise, full set of gears, manual, motor , Furnas reversing switch blah blah blah $265

and I didn't have room to take the 2 metal machinist tool boxes with me that he offered me. I did clean them out though!!

I was there picking it up 4 hours after it was listed and the seller told me he had 25 calls to buy it before I showed up......

thanks for the info rog. the word "scam" has a slightly different  meaning here but basically the same. the word scam isnt used lightly here!!!   very very serious charge!!! so you tend to hear lots of other words to slide around the use of the word "scam" but once deemed "scam" you will be hunted down without mercy!!!of course if its a condition of advertising that you must have the goods in your posession  then its a scam but if it reads "the goods must be for sale" then it isnt. just an agent trying to get a cut on your goods for sale. its a fine line... so how can it be policed.???? buyer beware!!!! that secret agents are on craigslist and ebay equally.

that was one lucky deal and sure you are still finding out just how lucky you were. i guess thats the acid test!! "can i come NOW and pick it up???? if you can great and if you cant ??????..

The engine is on ebay with 4 days to go and it's at 2000 USD. It is not poissible for the craigslister to buy it and make money when he  is offering at 1300 USD and has indicated willingness to accept less....... unless he is planning on winning the auction and scamming the real seller out of this engine and this is possible.

Craigslist is great for people that live in the City, but for people like me it has never worked out, most people do not want to sell if they need to ship an item and they dont like to take pictures or hassle with long distance sales. I have only bought one item from Craigslist and then inly because I knew someone who lived near the seller who could pick the item up and ship it.

The auction finished and my friend Dave has gotten 3305 usd for his Cretors.

The phony craigslist ad is still out there.
