Curious ItemI bought this yesterday from the Woodturners at Amberley:
Made from Walnut. The black rings give a little clue as to what this is. First person to guess what this is and its purpose wins
By the way, it is not a wooden carrot as my Mum thought it was

Is the metal part a tapering round section or is it 'hollowed'?
If its hollowed its a woodworking gouge if its round its not

You're quite correct
It's not hollow & therefore not a gouge.
It is a tapered round & your sort of on the right track

Sadly not an awl, it's used in woodworking. The one pictured tapers up to 3/8", I have others that taper up to 1/2", which is the most common size. Not used by carpenters/joiners these days very often, but an ingenious tool.

It's a tool for aligning the holes when making pegged joints in wood.

Absolutlely spot on, it's a 'drawbore pin' , used for pulling the dowel pins up tight on mortice & tenon joints. Most commonly used on where stair part such as the handrail joins to the newel post. Used to be used alot on roof trusses & timber ship building. These are quite collectable now

Closest so far - it is equine (to do with horses James). It's supposedly antique and Spanish.

I thought, how?
Then my imagination wandered, and I got it
Anway, Barry has now said it's to do with horses, so my guess is out.

I was told that it's proper name was a "Cortez Stirrup" used by Spaniards.
Looks like the thread has come full circle!
