Me too, moving targets, an object lesson in futility.

You might enjoy a 122/4 as much as a 130/2
I sure like mine,
you can see it by clicking the www button on the bottom of my post.

Oh, BTW mines not for sale.

I watched it arrive, same time I bought the Jensen 25, and followed the thread.  It's in great shape, lovely engine.

Which one did Sandy just get?  It seems rare that the e bay auctions identify them.
Nick

Check out the base on this one:

Funny I was looking at this very engine this morning.  It looks to be in great condition...but.....which one is it?
johnreid

I think it is a 125/4
kusuchi

Excuse my complete ignorance, but what do the little balls hanging from the disc connected by a driveband to the flywheel do?
johnreid

That mainly is decorative on those engines, on the big ones it is a centrifugal governor that when spinning above a certain speed throttle the engine back. On these it is decorative, On Rogers 51 replica you can see a functional one as in this picture.

Maybe Roger of Gil can give you more info
IndianaRog

Only thing I would add to John's explanation is that if you examine that governor on my 51 replica very closely, you can see a lever that rides in a groove around the bottom of the twirling part.

As the engine speeds up the governor balls do swing out to the side and this centrifugal force causes the lower grooved portion to rise against a bit of spring tension...as that lever rises with the grooved bit, it gradually cuts back steam flow to the steam chest it is attached to, thus slowing the engine.

The amount of throw allowed that steam "lever" is completely adjustable, so you have a fair amount of speed control once things are going fast enough to cause the balls to swing out and thus lift the lower part of the governor.  I would guestimate that it controls the upper 30-40% of the speed the engine could attain.

Now Richard, aren't you glad you asked!!!

That is how you learn. Real Steam engines have functional governors, Toys have make believe governors. Once you start noticing them on the bigger engines, you will appreciate the looks of the imitation ones on our toys.

Another note though, with some engines the fake governor is too much load and power is gained by unhooking the belt. The hobby line Jensen 25 has a fake governor and if lubricated doesnt seem to be a big problem, I had a Wilesco D10 and the fake governor cut the speed in half.

You Bet.
johnreid

Richard, I think you would enjoy going through this thread, also  notice that governors on some of the engines.

Richard, I highly reccommend taking the time to read through that entire thread John posted. You will enjoy it a lot.

There are plenty of pictures in there that Andrew would love to see.
johnreid

That marbleized look on that base of that Ebay engine is cool, I think they did that for a few years. I guess it was too expensive to continue doing.
Nick

It looks better than my purple based Fleischmanns.
kusuchi

Worth buying guy's.?

Seem to have a lot of stuff coming from UK.

It will soon be cheaper to go and get it.

If you like the look, then ok, just remember to revise your wish list.
johnreid

Although big engines are impressive, bigger isnt always better. If you find a nice one that has the looks that you like, I think that is a better addition to your collection than one that just takes up a lot of space.
The 125/4 might set off your display better than a real big one. I think that older German engines are something else though.

Ok John, Tell me what you really think!

I think that engine is really beautiful.  Whether it is the epitomy of style and class I really don't know.     I'm not big on restorations.  I'll do self builds. The condition looks great.   I don't believe that bigger is necessarily better, and I love the marble base.

So?

If that is a 125/4, the flywheel is 3.14 inches diameter, the boiler is 6 1/2 long with a diameter of 2.48 inches which I think is the same size as my 122/4s boiler but the flywheel is 1/4 inch larger than the 122/4
I think it is a cool looking engine and one that I seriously doubt will be duplicated in appearance by any other engine you own or are apt to purchase in th future. Are you after brute power or a more artistic look?
kusuchi

Artistry and craftmanship first, power a distant second
Nick

Richard, do you realize the 135 has almost a 5 inch flywheel!!!

12.5 cm or 4.92 inches!

I wasn't going to take it off the list.
