Cyldon 13/2 semirotative valve engine

I've had the engine that I bought a week ago running - needed a little work, reinstating pipework etc, but came right back to life. The boiler is unfortunately scrap, although I have managed to salvage the endcaps. I have a nice SE2 boiler inbound (cheers sparky!), which is VERY close in appearance to the original Cyldon boiler.

Anyway, here's the vid - pwered here by an SE1 boiler and meths burner.

just to remind you, this is the engine

James

what a beast!
MTA

When I first saw it I thought it was a home built engine Certainly runs well
Lewis

Very nice engine you have there runs like a dream
yosa

Great runner Mooseman. I like the Cyldons, but haven't got any yet.

The full set is achievable, as far as I know there are only five models, and all built between '47 and '52 I think.

You know more than me mate, am I close?

Yosa, this is from S.T.E.A.M magazine:

The complete 'Cyldon' range

Top - left 13/5, right 13/4. Bottom - left 13/2, centre 13/3, 13/1

Unfortunately the above engines are sometimes described as Rees engines. This is incorrect and is probably due to an error in Basil Harley's book 'Toyshop Steam', where he wrongly attributed the two models known him at the time as being made by L. Rees and Co Ltd.

Grahame Davis confirmed in his recent article published in S.T.E.A.M that the 'Cyldon' range was manufactured by Sydney S. Bird and Sons Ltd of Enfield between 1947-1951.

Cracking engines Mooseman.

So that's 2007 sorted out, for me, then.

You not after a Mersey engine Yosa?
yosa

I'd love a Mersey Mooseman, nice engines, and there's the obvious local connection. Do you know how many models they produced?

There are lots of nice engines, but for some reason I can't explain, the Cyldon was just an instant grabber for me.
oldstuff

Facinating engine, Mooseman. Runs beautifully. Thanks for vid and the close up.
I see what's meant by non-rotative. There is an ebay seller offering plans for a
simple homemade engine which employs a rocker lever(same principle)for valve
action...

Bottom right is an SE2
Sandman

Most impressed Odilon.

That's quite an action.

Great to see it running.
Steve_S

It certainly goes well. So fast its hard to see what's happening! Does it have a throttle?

Yosa, the Merseys you communly see are the 51,52, and 53. They come in a number of permutations, with/without reversing valve and geared takeoff. There is also a twin cylinder and even a megarare 3 cylinder engine. There was also a steam boat called the "Miss Mersey", I think.

They were based in Cooper's building in Church Street (still there I believe), but got burnt out in the Liverpool blitz of '42.
MooseMan

Right, a bit of video post restoration.....runs fine, but I need some proper wick for that burner.

Steve_S

Great stuff! It's always nice to see an engine that's a little out of the ordinary.
Mamodman123

Runs well! very nice sound!
Wallace

That's great Mooseman. Do you have steam pipe coming out of boiler, underneath?

Well spotted

That's the one modification I made to the Mamod boiler, to get it as close as possible to the Cyldon one.....involved drilling one small (3/16") hole, easily repaired if I ever need to.

That is fantastic.
In the other pic you put up of it, I saw it and assumed the steam pipe had to be connected in the top.

Then I saw the vid of it running. Had to look twice as I thought "but no steam pipe"

A great engine, that's for sure.
I recall someone a while back speaking of a burner made out of copper pipe? Is that this burner?
tmuir

Has a nice solid sound to it.
Good one.
Excluding my mobiles and loco I can see me moving away from Mamod stationaries onto older models that are more 'solid' looking.
SPOKESMAN

Thumpingly good sound (and engine!)

Yep, that's the fella....piece of heavy gauge brass pipe with three wick holders and a filler cap, plus a stabilising bracket.

Thanks for the kudos folks....several of you have commented on the nice "sound" of the engine. I must confess that that is in part due to the fact that my worksurface of choice is our large wooden kitchen table (covered for the occasion with my trademark awful tablecloth), which resonates nicely
