Cyldon burnerToday I've made a copy of a Cyldon burner for my 13/3, and luckily I have a real Cyldon burner for my 13/1 which I could copy from. I've been meaning to do this for some time but I didn't have any 1 inch diameter brass tube handy. Now I also need some to make an M122 chimney, so I've finally got around to buying some from Maidstone Engineering...

... who are highly recommended for reasonable prices and fast delivery. I've been experimenting with pressing parts from sheet brass using punches and dies made from wood, and using my biggest vice as a press. (What's your biggest vice? )
I don't think I've perfected this process yet, so I haven't taken any pictures. When I've properly got the hang of it I'll do a post about it. Anyway, I made the endcaps for the burner tube in this way. The filler cap is one I bought from MF at STIA, and it looks great. (I should add that MF makes and sells Cyldon burners which are works of art.) Anyway, here's mine...
And here it is with the real Cyldon burner (not so shiney!)....

Once again, some great work with the minimum of tools.
That's just fantastic Steve.
Is there any limits to this mans talents???

Just lovely. Seems to be more work in one of those than making a boiler.

Well, its very similar to a boiler. That's something I intend to have a go at soon... I have some bits and pieces that I'm going to try to cobble together into a Luton replica.

You never cease to amaze me, that is a true replica, hard to distinguish it from the real one.

Great stuff Steve
Pressing from sheet is not to bad once you get the size of the punch and die correct. In an ideal world the die should be the diameter of the punch + two thickness of the material being pressed. it has to be very accurate because if the clearance is to great you will not iron out the creases that form as you press the sheet. you end up with an end cap that looks like a beer bottle cap. if the clearance is not enough it is impossible to force the punch through the die. as for a vice well i am lucky enough to have a 5 ton fly press. a 6" record bench vice will do for 1" diameters though.
There is loads of work in these burners and they are very satisfying to make. it terms of the amount of work involved they are more time consuming that some boilers!

At one time I made a press using a small hydraulic jack and some I-beam material. Even with the right size die it is easy to end up with a bottle cap looking thing.
