D.R Mercer. Full steam film from A to Z

Hello all
I have made a film of the Mercer Igot from Jay_Minor. This is the film of the 2'nd steaming of the tractor. I steamed it one small stem up yesterday as a test run. I did a proper film of it today. I hope you all enjoy.
classixs

I did enjoy

What a beautiful wonderfully running piece this is, and OMG it can take some serious RPM`s

Thanks for sharing Knut
MrDuck

As Knut says it does impress
Swift Fox

Great video of a great runner.
IndianaRog

Knut, beautiful engine and very informative video.  That engine can certainly generate some high rpms
Erwin45

Beautiful video, indeed a pleasure to watch

Thank you all for your nice coments. .
Roger, I cant expect to teach any of you old fox'es in steaming etc. but i figued maybe someone on you tube was not so lucky to be part of a forum like this one to learn this things from, some helthy advice to them i thougght was a good idea. though, all in that film i have learn from you guys lol. so dont expect to learn mutch your self . the tube i used for emtying the tank, of exess water, that tube isnt heat resistant so i need to wait for the water to cool down, this mean i cant dry out the tank with natural warporition from exess steam heat. also i have not found out if there become any "left overs" of water and oil in the steam box, and how to drain it if there is a way. Can anyone give me a tip for that ? Roger has generously voluntaired to send me a heat resistent tube along with his special Jensen wissle valve, so the drying out from the boiler i will be able to do better once that arives. but the eventual left overs in the steam box, im not on top of yet. tip, anyone ?

Your Type 1 runs extremely well. The motion is demonstrated at its best at the slower speeds. Are you pleased with it?

any more pleased, and i would kiss the thing. that is however where I draw the line.
Im still in the learning prosess with it. I havent found out all i need to know, but i will get better Im sure
Thanks all for the great feedback.

A very enjoyable high quality video.

For emptying the boiler I just open the overflow plug and safety valve and tip the engine on it's side.  I do this when the engine is still hot (using tissue to protect my hands) so that any water remaining evaporates due to the residual heat.  For cleaning the water and oil from the smokebox I twist a bit of tissue, open the smokebox door and poke it into the bottom.  Any oil/water just soaks into the tissue and because its twisted it doesn't fall apart

Now that what i call steaming a good engine. Very nicely demonstrated.

Nice video ! Great engine too, I'm glad your pleased with it

wow, since you seem to voluntair . it is still the question of the steam box and how to drain it, im not here talking about the smoke box, at the front of the boiler tank, but the steam box, the case on top with the cyl and the valve. will any leftt overs from steam and oil remain in there ? how do i get it out ? do i even need to get it out ? and of couse the question about the Wick's, the cotton that came with it are terible, useless even, so i managed to put some fiberglass in there but I dont have a lot, and it seem hard to get more wick's from were ever. have you converted yours to run on gas ? Forest, has a set redy made with pipe ready bent. I was wondering if i should just go for it, have you any experience with it ? in advance, Thank you for the time and nice coments

Loved the video Knut, especially the cinematic opening sequence.

I don't think you need to worry too much about clearing the residual water from the valve chest. If you spin the flywheel by hand a few times, that ought to clear most of it, and the whatever is left behind won't cause trouble. All the parts in the Mercer which come into contact with steam/water are made of brass, so you needn't worry about rust.

Thanks for showing. Will we see it driving around?
Les

Watching that was tremendous.

The only worry I have is that you are using pure methanol, does this burn hotter than methylated spirits which it is designed to run on? If so you could run the fear of running out of water in the boiler.
Camst648

thank you Kevin and Les

I wasnt planing on driving it around much Kevin. there are plenty of films out there of the Mercer in movement, once again your very own film of the power it have to drive your doughters around the floor, I think demonstrate the movement. I will like to thank you very mutch on the information about the resedue in the steam chest, that is very good information to get as this things did not come clear in any the paperwork that came with it. Your information is highly aprechiated .

Les. I have not thought about the temperature difference mutch since i kind of thought the difference wasnt mutch, and in meth's disfavour. I tryed with a quick serch to find out but i didnt. Do you know the difference in flame temp ? my experience after this one "long" run was that there was still water in the tank left after the run was done. I have methylated spirit on a bottle here as well, that pinkish stuff, but i am not so happy with the variant I have here, I think it have some extra stuff added to it that has a slight dendensy to sot, and it smells a little wile burning. Pure meth on the other hand smell nothing, sot nothing and i have reasently bought 4 gallons of the stuff, so it will last me a lifetime and a half. I initially thought it burned at a slightly colder flame then the methylated spirit, that has mainly alchohol (etanol) in it. It may be that i am totally wrong on that. A question I will ask of this in the help section in here, hopefully some chemist is a member .

thank you both for the fine coments
Sandman

Great movie of a beautiful engine.

Excellent video of an excellent engine. It would look good driving around with micro radio control fitted if it could be done

Knut,I remove any  remaining oil/water from the lubricator using a cotton bud and afterwards put a drop of steam oil in the lubricator.Unable to help regarding wicks since I have always run mine on gas using a Forest Classics burner and gas tank.I recommend using gas, clean and controllable. Here is a picture of my Type 2 complete with gas tank-

Peter
Camst648

Thsnk you Peter
I will eventually buy the gas set from Forest. but other people manage to run thin using the intended method, so i will try a bit different things as well. but i am sure that sooner or later i will use gas. it is so much easyer.

Very enjoyable vid too watch, thanks for sharing.

WOW   Great video and what a piece of kit   You are soooo lucky to have a Mercer
kevininasia

Aw come on Knut, make a video of it driving around. Looking at the one you just posted, I'd say your videos are first-rate. Just because there are some already doesn't mean there can't be one more, especially a good one!

I don't think you need to convert to gas. It's personal preference of course, but the conversion does mean that you need to make some modifications to the scuttle/firebox to allow the gas burner to fit. Not a big deal, but methanol gives you plenty of power, and I'm not sure gas will give you any more. As you've already seen, my Mercer running on methanol can pull a 50-pound daughter. Yes, gas is more controllable, but you have a throttle valve and meths is cheap.
Camst648

Kevin
You speak the words of wisdom. I will not in any way rush to convert it, and i have reasently bought 4x3.8 liters can's of pure meth. so i need engines to run on it. If i run from it only the hot air engines i will have meth suply til year 2069 and then some. so i will need to spend some of it to run steam engines, this Mercer included . but Gas is easy . I have in my plan to buy a Cirrus Plant from CH in time, next year maybe. that can be run on meth.
By the way, has anyone mention that this doughrter pulling actually is quite impressive. the Mercer isnt a big engine, and you can hear on the engine that it does have more power left. I recon your Mercer is firmly run in, but still, that film show some very very impressive work load.
kevininasia

Yes, when I originally posted the video quite a few people were suprised by the power, myself included (here is the thread if you're interested http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=28741&start=0 ).

I'd like to see if it can pull me, but I fear for the trailer's axles. Need a bigger trailer.

Thank you Kevin
Promice us a film of it, if you ever try it out please. It might actually be strong enough to pull you, specially if you do it indoor on a flat smooth surfice.
Burnmafingers

Lovely TE and your video was a superb presentation.

Nice! Would like to see it moving under its own power like running around on the floor.

You are very lucky to have that engine.  Beauty
