E101

progress so far.

started as this

Old wooden base had dry rot. Originally it was probably south american origin hardwood (red/pink colour).
The new base is seasoned American white oak, takes paint well & a bit durable.
Sprayed with bnq bbq paint not overdone so as to leave some of the grain showing through (as the original). british racing green around the edges.
Firebox & boiler strap were very rusty so repainted with the bbq paint
Semi matt finish (not sure if the original were gloss).
Crank trunion, piston & oiler mounts were ok, so kept the original paint.
Alot of work on the brass, still got to do it all with 'autosol' as recommended by someone on the forum
(makes it shine like a hens teeth)!

still a bit to do before final assembly, roll on th eweekend (after a bit of house decorating )
Sandman

OOh Can't wait to see this finished.

Looks awesome.

That's great mj, it's going to look fantastic! Is that a new stay rod through the boiler or the original? Are you going to steam it?
MooseMan

wow! what a cracker!

What was up with the original base.....dry rot??

It's the original stay rod, looks steam tight. All the solder around the stay nuts is ok.
Are we going to steam it? 'does a bear do number 2's in the woods', you bet we are.

Do you know those horrible bottles of distilled yuck you seem to get for Christmas, or if someone you know goes on a trip??

I've got a bottle of ouzo in the cupboard that I might try to run an engine on

A little democracy is called for here

a few brownie points earned with a bit of decoraring, will earn countless hours of steam time unhindered.

We all learn our place in the pecking order sooner or later
mj

It's finally back together, been waiting for paint & varnish to dry.
Small snag with the piston being tight in the cylinder at the end of the stroke, but swapped it for a spare assembly & away she went

Darn boiler's got a soot mark on already.

'Chuffed to bits' with the results so far, maybe a few tweeks & finshing touches to complete.

Thanks to all those who offered advice & help over the last few weeks
MTA

You have done a fantastic job with that mj. You realise now that you've got to beat that standard of finish with every engine you restore/clean

There's a few bits up close that look a bit suspect
Sandman

Great job and a credit to you.

Anyone would be proud to have that engine in their collection.
Steve_S

That's superb mj... a beautiful restoration! Are you going to do the other one?

Definately going to do the other 101, got to get hold of the firebox first. That scrap 101 on ebay has the bits & also the metal base, which I'd rather use for the second one (quite a few of us have that on the watch list!).
Does anybody have any 101 spares that they're willing to do a swap on?
There are several other steam projects waiting on the 'to do list', so may try a smaller engine as the next project.
Griffin

That is one super engine, nice work.
Well done.
SPOKESMAN

A brilliant job mj - looks an absolute gem!
Wallace

Yeah it looks great mj. Well done with that.
yosa

Fantastic mj, brilliant job.

Definately one of the best mate.
sparky

I'll be passing on that one as postage would be close to 40 pounds for me, but the other little bowman in sorry condition that finishes tonight I will have a little tickle at
