Empire Steamup

Well, the weather's miserable....only one thing for it - STEAMUP!!!

This time, it was the turn of my two Empires, the B30 and the (vertical) B31. The B31 is the older one, from 1928, and the B30 is from the mid 'thirties. Made in the USA, and run on 110v mains heaters, so a chunky stepdown transformer is required....and yes, I do check for electrical safety before, during and after a run, especially with my kids there. The workshop is from the former DDR (East Germany)....the lineshaft, saw, grinder and drop hammer are EKT, the green reciprocating saw is Oesterwitz.

Moose, you are a very lucky man.

Good to see little mooses' getting in on the steam!

Those empires look in great condition for their age and your kids look like they are enjoying them.
bigal

Great hobby with kids- my grandson once said "pere, I like all your steam engines"
Griffin

Great pics Moose, they capture the moment perfectly.  Memories to savour you have there.
Sandman

Great to see Odilon.

The pics of the kids just set the whole thing off perfectly.

You've much to be proud mate, and no mistake.

That is SO cool.  Mine is 11 now, just got braces and glasses, cute beyond all.  I am lucky in that she has at least a passing interest in what I do.  SHe does say"My Daddy has the BEST toys!"  I will bet that yours do too, Moose.

It is a bit scary, you and I could pass for brothers.
Les

Great pictures and good to see the children getting involved.

Moose...good to see the next generation of steamers enjoying a couple of classic engines.  Those Empires are gorgeous!!!  I also like that lineshaft setup...first rate.

Not to mention HEAVY.    I think one of them could make a handy weapon, still steam!!
johnreid

One great thing about the electrically fired engines is that you can have a good day steaming them and clean up is a breeze.

Yes indeed they are, and if I remember a certain collector from the US Midwest had a lot to do with that.....now who was it....lemme think.....oh yes, I remember!

Thanks for all your kind comments guys......those Empires are very fine engines indeed, and I would recommend the B30 or B31 to anyone....massively made, those bases are solid cast iron, and all the rest, including the engine frame, is cast brass. They're electric, but with a few simple precautions and a bit of common sense they're perfectly safe to run.

I think the DDR models complement them nicely - politically they may be from the other end of the spectrum, but as far as design goes they are equally solidly made.

Always nice to have a steamup with the kids....Millie, at the ripe old age of 7, has become very jaded ("dad, knock the regulator back a bit please"), but Daniel, who is three, is utterly enchanted by the whole thing.

And yes, as a few of you have observed, I'm a lucky guy, certainly when it comes to a lot of the important things.

God steamups are GREAT! !

Lovely pictures Moose.  Thanks for sharing (sniff, sniff   )

My daughter and I had some friends over a couple of weeks ago and we ran a few engines and now they are telling me they've heard about nothing else.  So that's another 9 year old looking to burn their fingers for the rest of their lives

That's the way! When we old duffers (he says at 39) throw in the towel the next generation will be ready to steam up our engines!
igy569

Old duffer?  I just turned 39 as well!!!!

I only feel 46!!!
Les

I'm 48 but I don't feel old.

Moose.....

I can`t add anything to what has already been said.

You have a great many blessings to be thankful for....

Great pics Moose. Great to see the kids getting in on the fun

... you are a lucky man, Odilon! These are the most charming pictures I've seen here on the forum.
