Eye opener!I received my Sp4 today guys! I bought it on ebay its never been fired and was quoted as "new". This model was made in 23/10/02 so its a fairly modern engine! The design hasn't changed up untill 07 anyway.
I have to say the quality of this engine is really really impressive!
All the threads etc are straight in the boiler! As is the end cap! It still has the little silver tray like the old SP models!
It has exhaust to the chimney which is also a bonus! The box is colourful and does the job well! Has all the little compartments for keeping your fuel and oil etc!
Its not designed or built to break world records but if I was a kid at christmas I'd be really really happy with this engine!
I feel sometimes as collectors (we all) are too used to the older models with everything cast into brass and quality that can't be beat! These are designed as cheap "starter" engines into the hobby! I think these retail at around 80-100? I'd be more than happy to pay that!
Another eye opener was the SP6 at STIA! Another great engine! Runs really really well and looks the part! For 130 pounds its nothing really!
We've all given newer mamods too much of a hard time! Remember they don't build for serious collectors with SE4's and flatbases everywhere!
Any of the new Mamod engines are guaranteed to put a smile on a kid or adults face it has for me!

A nice buy MM, The SP4 still retains the Malins inspired features.
IMHO I think the SP4 would be a better buy than the new SP5, for someone wishing to buy a new engine.

Nope, sorry, i'm keeping this unfired until the day I die
I've had an SP4 before, fired well. I'm sure I'll be able to bare the temptation
We can look back on it in 50-60 years and say, "wow, an unfired SP4" although it will never catch up with Steely's Hobbies SE3

Well they are built EXACTLY the same, so there really is no reason other than history of the engine to want an older one. you can pick them up on ebay pretty easily too
This new SP4 is very much still Malins inspired, but to be honest, you can't really class any SP engine as 'old'
Granted they are a little older than me but they aren't reaching mid-life crisis yet

well they first started making in 1979 so the ones made then will be 28 years old now

That's no age they are getting on, but still fairly modern looking!
It's always a debate when something reaches a certain age does it become retro? or not?
