Fairground Models

We are looking for fairground accessories for our new Jensen 25.

Ferris Wheel, Roundabouts and Boat swing.  We also need a Wilesco 50 lineshaft or similar and drivebelts I guess, though what sizes  I am uncertain.

Andrew wants to make a model like this:

http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/about8553.html

We will make a nice hardwood flat base for it.

We will, Reid and Nick, (shame on you), NOT be using white mice to test the ferris wheel

We have a hamster
Nick

I hope he's got his helmet ready.

Only 2 I could find on ebay.
kusuchi

Thanks Nick,

I'd pulled up nothing on e bay in the last four days.   What are you entering in the search field to give you these results?

I'm definately interested in both of those.

As a matter of interest, what do you enter in the search field for a general search of the type of engines seen on this forum.  I've found that the use of the word 'steam',( unless connected to a manufacturer like Mamod), returns a deluge of electric train sets.

Any members selling fairground accessories?

Mocha, the hampster is waiting with baited breath.
kusuchi

Mocha?  Where are you?

No... really...... it'll be fun

(just not for you )
Les Marsh

Have you tried

P.s the mice are really for other outing !
Les Marsh

You might want to get one of these.

I just typed Wilesco.

Here are the searches I try to do every night, weeden steam, jensen steam & jenson steam, wilesco, mamod, fleischmann steam, fulton steam, steam engine, steam toy, lineshaft, and line shaft.

So did I, unusual that there is none at all.
kusuchi

Hi Wilescoman,

Your excellent 'First Video' so inspired Andrew, my 8 year old son, and I that we have since acquired, our first stationary, a Cast Iron Base Jensen 25.

We are now looking for the fairground accessories to construct a set up similar to yours.

Whilst highly enjoyable and exciting, this is not an inexpensive venture.

Pease let me know in advance if you're posting a second video so I can make sure Andrew doesn't see it.

Many thanks for introducing us to this hitherto unkown side of steam.
Nick

Have you looked at the one Les has? It lights up and everything! Don't show Andrew.
kusuchi

Hi Nick,

Post me a link, please.  And tell Les to get up off the floor, we've no idea when his carpet was last cleaned!
Nick

The picture is 1/2 way up the page. That is all I know about it. Les can tell you more.

Carpet
Thats a cloth all my engines sit on when displayed, gets a bit oily.
Nick

So this is where you got the carpet thing.

Sorry guys, wasn't just the DSL that was a bit slow last night.

This is awesome.    Who makes it?  Wilesco? I haven't seen it on any of the US websites.
Les Marsh

It's made by Wilesco, it is a new release which came out about August 2007. Look under new releases.
http://www.wilesco.de/wilesco/us/index.html
Nick

Beware though, if Andrew sees it, he may want it.
Nick

You should also look into making a workshop out of their other figures. (Sorry for adding to your addiction. )
James

How about one of these??

Les Marsh

I got my Striker from Chasteam.
http://www.chasteam.com/wilescomodels.htm

Plenty of other fairground stuff there as well.
kusuchi

Ok.  Our original idea was the Boat Swing, M77, the Ferris Wheel, M78, and the Roundabout, M 70, just like Wilescoman's layout.

I was going to have a nice tropical hardwood base built in the millwork shop.

Now we've just got to have the Striker, M95, and Andrew hasn't even seen it yet.  (Anyone getting the impression I'm using him as an excuse?).

Really like the Organ Grinder, James, thanks for the link.
Nick

Have you seen Reids pumper guy?
kusuchi

ncseverson wrote:

Enlighten me.   (like I need to see anything else I want)
Nick

I will have to find his thread about it, but he fixed it up in several ways (even though it was new ).
Nick

Check out the recent posts, I brought Reids M88 pumper forward.

Thanks Nick,

Looks great. Where am I going to stop?

Rest assured, Reid,  the next time we are passing through Miami we will look you up.

In the meantime if you happen to be passing our way............!
Nick

He's got his address in the 1st post of the thread, so you'll know where to go.

Sorry about the striker but the kids do enjoy them, and of course you are using your son, it's a very good excuse.

What's the M95 Stricker like? I was considering one of those.

Will you be bringing it to Tilford

I should be bringing it to Tilford, here are some more pictures.

kusuchi

Nice  Les,

Got to have one .

Just watched two e bay auctions for a roundabout and swing boat sell, out of Canada, for almost as much as Ministeam charge new! They were in great condition, but.......

Think I might just put a package together and buy them all from ministeam.

Any advice on drivebelts,  I'm looking at a M50 lineshaft?

Regards,
Nick

The cheapest way to get drive belts is wait for a "parts" auction on ebay, where the springs come with other parts. If it is just the springs on ebay, they end up going for the same or more as they are new, plus shipping.

You can always use dental floss until you buy some, but if you're putting in an order, I'd just add the springs to the order.

I think a person could make a living off of selling the springs on ebay for what they sell for.
Minor1PJG

Thanks for the extra pictures Les.  Now I know I want one
Les Marsh

Some pictures of my Wilesco Roundabout. It came with three unjoined drivebands.

Les Marsh

I don't have a set of Wilesco Swingboats but.......................
Les Marsh

.................... I do have a set of Wilhelm Krauss Swingboats c1930.

Minor1PJG

Well isn't that nice

How much is a ride

Ooh,  now that's nice.

Not yet, but I have run them.
Wilescoman_123

Heres a other photo to keep you going !
Nick

That is a real nice setup, the buses and car really add to it.
Sandman

I really like that.

Great attention to detail.
Les Marsh

I do like that.
kusuchi

Me too, in case anybody hadn't noticed.

All the pieces look even nicer in your photo than on the websites.

Noticed you used the M57 lineshaft.   Do you have a pic that shows the connections between the lineshaft, the fairground pieces and the engine?

Why did you chose the M57 and not the M50?

Thanks for posting.
Nick

I really like the look of the angled lineshaft, it would give you a greater possibility of things to build.
Wilescoman_123

ill post some pics Saturday for you ,basically i used the m57 because it as more pulleys just in case if i wanted to add any more fair ground rides ,but i think i will leave it as it is ,more isn't always better iam very pleased everyone likes it ! there is a M76 Nostalgic Transmission same as m50 but looks a lot nicer been trying to get hold of one !
Nick

I forgot about the nostalgic ones, have you checked them out Richard?
Wilescoman_123

theres also a m79 which is new to me !
http://www.chasteam.com/wilescodrivingmodels.htm

Thanks Les,

But with the Jensen 25 en route, and having no luck with US e bay,  I bought the whole lot at ministeam.com  2 days ago.  The only thing they didn''t have in stock was the Striker.

Regards,
Les Marsh

No problem.
Nick

How many items are in that "whole lot"?
kusuchi

The  Boat Swing, M77,

The Ferris Wheel, M78,

The Roundabout, M70,

The Striker, M95,

Wilesco Lineshaft M50.

Drivebelts as recommended

OSHA approved Hamster helmet and safety harness.
Nick

Sounds like a great setup. Wilesco has high standard on these, so I don't think the helmet and harness will be needed.

I don't think PETA would approve of the hamster supplies.

PETA stands for Prefer to Eat Tasty Animals doesnt it? However Gerbils are not a part of my diet.

I thought it was:- Prefer to Eat Tiny Animals.
Nick

I've also heard it as People Eating Tasty Animals.
kusuchi

Mocha is a Hamster, not a Gerbil.

Gerbil's have a poor record as test pilots.
Andrew

Does anyone make a fairground rollercoaster?  That woud be really cool.
Nick

I am still looking. I thought I found one, but it is a wind up rollercoaster:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Chein...temQQssPageNameZRSS:B:SRCH:US:101
Mamodman123

Didn't Knex make one or whatever it was called??
Nick

What all did erector sets do? I know they had a ferris wheel, but what else?
kusuchi

Andrew wrote:

I was not actually involved in this one.  But it is a pretty cool idea.  All the steam  engine would need to do is ratchet the car to the highest point and, just like the real thing,  gravity would do the rest. Could be awesome.

Patent Pending
Nick

Could the ebay one be modified? I think it is just a crank that operates it to wind it up.
Les Marsh

ncseverson wrote:

They can be modified, just depends on how fiddly it is.
Minor1PJG

I have seen one running with large steel ball bearings instead of cars.

Not sure who made it.  It might have been Crabfu

Good idea Andrew
Nick

You didn't let Andrew see the rollercoaster, did you?
kusuchi

ncseverson wrote:

No, not yet.  Shame it has no cars.  Pretty cool idea though.

He's too busy steaming to be searching the web, (I don't think he even knows how to use ebay, thank heavens).  But it was him who came up with the idea of a rollercoaster accessory.

Won't take long, and when he does, you might want to build an extension.

Not sure you'll find anything specifically steam driven, likely all electric - but given the direction of everyone 'round here I'm sure there would be NO shortage of imaginative ideas on conversions...

http://video.aol.com/video-detail...on-roller-coaster-model/247868100

No shortage of video of these coasters set up, easy to Google.

I saw one of these set up at a local hobby store, and I was enthralled - couldn't take my eyes off it for ages.

25 years ago I had the idea of making model coasters (and kits) for retail sale - life got in the way, and I didn't pursue it at all - ah well.
kusuchi

What a shame! You'ld probably be having dinner with Bill Gates tonight.
Nick

I think if you buy a new rollercoaster, a conversion is the only option.

Tucher & Walther is expensive. The Seller is one of the better recognized Toy Steam dealers in the US often referred to as Minsteam
