First run of my Te1aHere is the video of the first firing of my Te1a.
Sorry about the shakey video but its hard to run the engine and hold the camera.
My wife is suffering morning sickness at the moment and the smell of meths makes her sick so no chance of getting her to hold the camera.
The laughing in the background is my son.
I think I need a new reverse lever as it goes flat out in reverse but will not run at all in forward.
Will get one off ebay and see if that fixes it.

Well it goes well in reverse Tmuir! Why won't it go forward?

Why is that then?

Tmuir mentioned it might be reverse lever.
Going on the past 2 similar probs on these forums, sounds like it might be it too.

When I put the lever into forward position. It just wont run.
Even worse there is a bit of sideways movement that allowed the piston to come half out of the cylinder and jam.
That was fun, piston jammed, try to free it and you get a burst of steam at you.
Presure building, still can't free piston, safety valve goes off, still couldn't free the piston. It was at this point I removed the meths burner and blew the whistle to release pressure. Whistle seemed to go on forever..
One thing for sure all my soldering is steam tight.
Not going to try it again until I replace reverse lever as the jammed piston was a bit of a worry.

I remember on the old forums someone had a similar problem. The problem was found to be that the little nik on the lever didn't go into the special engagers on the engine frame...

Yosa had a similar problem too. For him the trunion screw hole was worn and enlarged in the reverse lever

Sounds like the port face holes are not matching the cylinder holes correctly.

I think this is my problem, when you look at the hole in the reverse lever it is slightly oval, not round.
Just sent forest classics an email as I want to buy road wheels.
If he has a reversing lever, front spring and road tyres all in stock I will order them this week,

I think that'll be it based on my experience. But, its also worth checking the exhaust pipe is clear if it runs backwards but not forwards (credit for the exhaust idea goes to Mamodman) as there is a separate exhaust for each direction.

I'm pretty sure the exhaust pipe is clear as I replaced all the pipe work on the engine and last thing I did before fitting the pipe work was to blow through each pipe to check they were not blocked, but it is worth another check just to be sure.

My Te1a now runs forward.
The solder on the steam pipes stopped the reversing lever from going far enough forward to allow it to run in forward direction.
A little filing fixed it.

Great stuff tmuir. Great feeling when you solve a snag like that. Nice one mate.

Nice one Tmuir! great to see you sorted the problem!
the best thing about Mamods is they are very simple, and very easy to fix once you know the problem!
Top stuff, runs like a dream

Now to get some road wheels for it.
All thanks goes to Manxman for giving me the boiler.
I still owe Manxman for the boiler too need to finish making the stuff for him this weekend.

Yep and if I gave it a little kick probably sideways aswell.
Running pretty well though it does run out of breath after a few meters, give it a second or two to build up steam and off it goes again.
I may try my uprated safety valve for my loco on it next run.
That will let it get up to 20PSI instead of 15PSI should give it longer runs before it runs out of breath.

Excellent stuff, just check for steam tightness.
