First run of the Tern boatSorry, the vids are short. Being it's first run, I was tending to the boat, more than worrying about filming.
The first is it's first run ever. Bit spluttery. Every now and then there's a popping noise, it's steam releasing from between faceplate and cylinder
I tightened it up a little more for second run
Remember, this is only from a MM1 burner. Going to make a burner to suit
Can't remember if this was still the first run, or the second. Ran a bit more steady
And finally, the water test. Sorry, camera in left hand, a bit rough
Will try more vids today. Gale winds and high heat outdoors today, so another indoor run

Great to see Wallace, looks like it may need a little ballasting, although you had the top covers off.

Beautiful Wallace....that'll sail just fine, you probably don't want the engine to go much faster than that!
Great stuff!

Looks great Wallace! Looks like it'll be pretty fast on open water.

Really pleased for you mate.
I bet once you get it sorted and sailing you and your little daughter will have a ton of fun with it.
I can see it being one of your best investments yet in every way.
I'm waiting eagerly for the big test video as well.
Keep them coming Wallace.

Finally found the videos
It looks an excellent buy! the real fun starts when you get her in a larger bit of water . Then it will all be worth it

Cheers guys for the comments. I think it's been a worthwhile investment for sure
Yeah it looks like it look might get going a little too quick with a bigger burner, not sure. Don't want it faster as Mooseman said
I am going to repack the MM1 burner and see how it goes.
Also mucking around modifiying a corroded MEC1 evap burner to try it.
The chrome plate around the top of the burner is what stops it from fitting in. So I'm fixing it up, going to make a new top for it to narrow down the mesh strip, and see how it goes.
Basically the MM1 burner gives enough flame/heat. Just a matter of extending the running time.
My daughter already loves the look of it. She's finally recovering from illness today so hasn't seen it run yet
Re the ballast? The deck and front cover don't weigh much at all. It sits nicely in the water so I can't see it needing any.
Sadly windy hot weather stopped a outdoor run today
Once I have the burner sorted out, I daresay I'll make another rear deck and attach R/C equip. After seeing how quick it will run unless I get in the pool with it, it'll be hard to control
Thanks again guys.
I have watched your vid a few times today Mooseman

It looked fairly balanced to me too Wallace and those tops won't weigh that much will they?
I can't wait to see the next video, I enjoyed moosemans so this one should be really good too!
You need a little Aussie flag on the back though Wallace

Funny that, I was thinking a flag, Aussie, but I'd have to go for the British flag I think. Keep in style.
Not sure what to look for needing ballast? Back sits a little lower, but seems normal for a boat.
The front aluminium cover is very light, even the rear wood one is. Not much heavier than if it were balsa.
I'm going to get my RC stuff tomorrow from my oldies. See what the receiver and servo weigh, and the 4AA's.
Plan is for batteries up front, servo at back of course, not sure where to put receiver yet.
They should all be small enough, from memory they are.
Otherwise I'll be jumping in with the boat. Weather is hot enough, water isn't

Yes you might need to take your waders Wallace, or at least be prepared to go in after it
It's a good idea to have it R/C anyway! you will have full control then, and be able to steer it from a greater distance. I'f not even sure how you would steer it any other way

I know Mikes suggested with string, which is a good idea.
I could put rudder on a turn to make it go in circles.
But in a pool, that'd be a little tricky.
Running it with 2 people would be fine, but I like the idea of RC
I just hope it'll fit/work

String would work yes! forgot about that option
Having it running in circles is ok, aslong as you can somehow still controll it. You don't want to be swimming after it

Been on Dartmoor this afternoon - found a few shallow, calm stretches of water for when mine is finally ready!

That'd be great Mike, wish we had that or similar here.
We have an area with shallow calm water, but it's the lake, saltwater
