Flash Steam Model Boat on E Bay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAP...sPageName=VIP:Watchlink:middle:uk

Would anyone know how to run this?  How fast would it be?
rangerssteamtoys

I could probably figure out how to run it if you bought it, I would need to work on it though.

It might be slightly faster than a normal boiler and engine setup, but its no hydroplane if thats what your thinking

So far it looks pretty cheap for a boat like that.

Do you have any plans to buy it?

Was thinking about it, Ranger, but it all depends on performance.

As a regular launch, I'm not interested.

I wasn't expecting a 135mph tethered hydroplane.  But I would have thought, with a flash steam boiler, this should go pretty fast.  The seller describes it as a 'straight runner competition boat'.

I'll contact him, but I don't get the impression he knows much about it.
rangerssteamtoys

It all depends on the operating pressure, and volume of steam.

A flash steam boiler means its a water tube boiler, well the boiler could run at 100psi or 30 psi. We just dont know from the description. It looks to be operating pressure, due to all the valves gauges, and stuff. That stuff could be just for the burner and water pump

I'm not saying that it wont go fast, but just becuse its flash steam doesnt mean it goes fast.

If its "cheap" and you want it, buy it. just to learn about those types of setups.

Thanks, Ranger.

I asked the Seller the question, and I'm watching the auction.

But I'm not interested in bidding it too far up unless it goes like the clappers.

Always wanted a flash steam tethered hydroplane.

Who doesnt?

I would like a real one, not a model.

Not sure where I would run a model, let alone the real one.

Make a giant tether cable running from the center of the island to the ocean

Good way to escape hurricanes, it runs off of their aftermath

That would be a 14 mile tether.  A record in the flash steam hydroplane world.

Now let's test your math, Ranger.

At 135 mph, how long would it take to circle the Island?
rangerssteamtoys

Around 39-40 minutes

14 is the radius,therefore

Circumfrence= 2*pi*14 or pi*28
3.14*28=87.92 mile circumfrence

135/2=67.5
So in 30 minutes you would travel 67.5 miles.
Guess another 10 minutes, test it.
10/60=1/6 so 1/6= .16666666ect.
.16666666*135=22.514.....
67.5+22= 89.5

So around 39-40 minutes, not accounting for accleration

I think I'm right     , that is assuming the 14 is the radius, not the diameter.

Might be the long way around for getting the answer, but it doesnt use alot of dreaded formulas

I remember as a kid a friend of mine had a tether Airplane with a Cox engine on it, one would stand and move on a circle holding the tether line while moving in a circle and eventually getting dizzy. One day he bought a bigger airplane, one that should have been RC, anyhow he stood there and held the tether for about two laps and the force of the centrifugal mothion of the plane got to be too much and he could not hold on, the plane was eventually found in a tree about 8 blocks away, luckily it was not found in a window Need I tell you stories of Estes Rocket experiments?
rangerssteamtoys

I got a cox powered helicopter from a friend, you just twist the prop to start it and let it go. It flys straight up 150-200 feet then dies and falls back down    Ooooh aaahhhhhh

Also got a cox powered airplane, R/c    It made it 5 feet in the air, nose dived    hit the ground. Never worked again.

I used to shoot off those rockets, when the ones with cameras came out we got one. We put the C type of rocket (most powerful), it was windy........ never found it    Or the camoflouged one   , wait.. why would the make a rock camoflouged????? To make it really hard to find
I have about 50-60 rocket engines, I did out the powder with a screw driver and hammer the I light it. It make ALOT of smoke, makes a good fuse too

I make it 39 minutes and 6,1 seconds, not accounting for sea conditions, acceleration, etc.

When I am finally able to do the test, I'll let you know the results.

......and James doesn't think math is useful.
rangerssteamtoys

I wasnt far off

39 minutes and 61 seconds? Wouldn't that make it 40 minutes and 1 second

Sorry, my mistake.

39 minutes and 6.1 seconds, not 6,1 seconds.
rangerssteamtoys

I figured it out, but it was still weird to look at

So are you going to be bidding on it?

I haven't heard back from the seller......so probably not.
kusuchi

530 pounds! ($866.00)

I guess not.
rangerssteamtoys

Ask the buyer why he bought it    response would probably be
It's a flash steam boat, that means that it will go lightning fast

How much is the Uk pound worth now? It used to be like 1 pound=2 Us dollars
johnreid

1 pound is $1.63 today, tomorrow who knows.

As of close of business today, the spot rate on the pound was $1.63479.

Think the Seller inherited the boat.  In his description he seemed to have no idea how it worked and never responded to my questions regarding it's speed.
