flat base refurb warning shocking pics

Hi after buying this little mamod

A quick check over revealed the normal probs with wobblers of this age wear on the main bearings ,cylinder pivot and the cylinder bore so just to show how I refurb these engines for my collection as i like them play worn but in good running order
The boiler was cleaned with paint stripper then pickled and given a pressure test

The fittings cleaned up and the main frame brought back to a good flat face for remachining of the pivot/main bearings

Then set up on the mill to ream out the 1/8 holes to 5/32 for the new bushes

The cylinder was then lapped to remove some slight score marks

The piston then turned down to 1/4 then a sleeve made up and pressed on with a little solder paint the whole lot heated up then polished to fit the cylinder

Then the acid test the first firing and run after a little running in she will be fine i think its the closest i can get to a new old toy

Cheers Phil she is a good runner with a bit of umph   well for a mamod
kind regards frazer
MrDuck

Old toys are not new or intended to be but sometimes we want what it was and you achieved that very well
loose nut 45

Nice job, skillfully executed.

You gave that engine a whole new lease on life...if it were mine I would go the final step and refinish it with a fresh coat of paint.

It runs like new, why not look like new!!
gremlin

sounds lovely, nice job

I think Frazer is aiming for the well preserved dowager look rather than the mutton dressed as lamb
hellequin

Thanks for the kind words gents
The problem I find is where to stop on a restoration it will always be a matter of personal taste
Thanks Fred could not have put it better myself.I have restored a lot of older toys both for myself and clients but once the whole toy has been rebuilt, repainted and rebadged I always feel that the toy has lost a lot of its charm and that historic feel that they have . A classic example is my Peter Pan it had to be totaly rebuilt including the paint work and to be honest I just dont like it anymore but at least it can be sailed so in this case needs must .A tatty good runner is my thing
kind regards frazer

Good work on the mechanics there, Frazer.  Runs great, and sounds good, too.
hellequin

Thanks Dean, the duo got neglected though thats why its sitting at the back.
cheers

I definitely love mutton dressed as lamb, but I can certainly appreciate the dowager look as well...whatever works for you Frazer!

BTW Fred, that was an excellent analogy!
Gary279

Wow,  well done!!!

Looks like you've made progress on it though, Frazer.  I see you have the burners done.  They look nice!

Would this be tatty enough for you Frazer? She's a good runner but not very easy on the eye.

Great work on that Frazer.

That's not the usual reaction  more like
The missing paint is bad enough but the creosote topcoat is the final straw.
hellequin

Hi Fred, A nice play worn engine with one careful owner and several bad ones
best wishes frazer
Wallace

Nice job
tmuir

Nice.
I liked the way you repaired the piston.
I think you have taken the approach that clock restorers normally take.
Restore it back to running condition, but leave as much as possible of the original metal, even if it means the repair takes longer.
Les

A very tasteful restoration.
Tony Bird

Hi Frazer,

Excellent job.

Regards Tony.
