Flat base SE2 brass flywheel ex Canada

My new SE2 flat base brass flywheel engine arrived yesterday from Canada, unpacked it and found that, whilst the water level plug, safety valve & whistle unscrewed nicely, the piston was seized in the housing and the whistle lever was also siezed.

Dropped the piston assembly in boiling water for 5 minutes, a gentle turn of the piston rod, whilst holding the piston block (both held with pliers of course) and it came unstuck easily, pulled apart & squirted engine oil into the block assembly, and the piston began to move smoothly.

A drop of engine oil in the bottom end of the whistle and, with a little leverage it also came unstuck.

Replaced all the washers, thanks barry 1946, replaced the wicks and fuelled up the burner, hot water in the boiler, fired her up and held my breath as there was some concern over a possible botched solder job on the water level plug end cap as the water level plug outlet was at 10.30 instead of 12 noon.

Water boiled a little steam escaped out of the top of the safety valve, spun the wheel anti clockwise and nothing happened. tested the whistle, ouch, use gloves next time. Spun the flywheel again & suddenly realized that the steam regulator was in the off position, doh . Tried again and away she went, yeah, .

I'll pull the engine apart and give it a good clean and polish when time permits and put it back up on the thread. The stuff on the base is just dust.

Pity I don't have a vido camera & broadband, sigh, maybe one day.

A very cheap buy, first a flat base MM2 with brass flywheel and now an SE2 flat base brass flywheel, both from Canada and at a good price, great.

Cheers

Now I like that Chris. I bet that is going to clean up really well. Look forward to seeing the results. That is one well travelled little engine.

A nice example - and the remains of a blue oval decal on the firebox!

They are great little engines 1949-53 vintage.

All it needs is a good clean up.

Great buy with loads of potential.

It'll look a treat when done.

Well done.

If I can do 1/2 as good a job as you do I'll be well pleased.

Thanks Sandman, Yosa & Tony, I'm very happy with it especially since the suspect solder on top of the water level plug end cap turned out to be OK. Must have been an apperntice to set the water level plug hole at 10.30,

It'll clean up a treat

Thanks MM, very happy with it, especially since the solder problem on the end cap came to light.

Same engine isn't it James?

It's easier to get heat proof black paint, so maybe they changed for a short while?
Lewis

the paint was never "completely" heat proof though was it mm

Where?

The firebox no chance, most of the chimney paint flaked off too!

Only the bases stand up to the heat well, and they only get hot around the burner. Engine frames too!
Lewis

all the paint on mamods was never totally heat proof as in it will take shit hight temps

it will burn of after loads of runs

the base never really gets hot becuase the flame is no where near it

Solid fuel trays get really hot. If I was to use my SP5 burner on one of my meths burner SE3's it would blister the paint.

The fireboxes scorch, no real way to stop that happening adds a bit of character I guess. The SP range has good paint, but silly chrome sides. It happens on Mamods, Bowmans, Wilesco etc etc
Lewis

aye
the crome sides are a bugger some times as i found out on my sp2

Once they rust severely they are difficult to bring back to a good standard. Most polish up well enough
Lewis

aye mine did

but the se paint on the fireboxes goes quickly
SPOKESMAN

Hows this SP2 doing Lew . . .
flywheel61

I've been spending too much time painting the outside of the house, I call it the Sydney Harbour Bridge as, by the time i'm finished I'll have to do it all over again. But finally finished the SE2 flat base with the brass flywheel.

I was quite woried about the brass measles/dedzincafication.

But most of it polished out and since i've fired it there are no leaks.

I didn't repaint any of it, just put a new decal on the firebox, as soon as I polished it most of the original decal flaked off.

Despite the measles still being visible, I rather like the result.

Great work Chris!! That came up nicely. Well done
Sandman

Top class job Chris.

These old brass flywheel jobs are a favourite of mine.

You've done it proud mate.
flywheel61

Thanks, SM, I feel that way myself. I've also got the flat base 1954 model, but with the mazak flywheel and it just doesn't give off the same vibes. There's something extra about brass, may be a little more warmth.

That is a realy top job Chris well done
you have put ours to shame

Wow that looks great Chris really came up a treat! Very impressive!

A few marks give an engine character Chris - to me they look more 'believeable'!!
James

What an engine Chris!

Love the decal.

Looks great chris, i must start cleaning up mine soon. Is the lever arm on the whistle, brass or alloy? Mines alloy, which is probably a replacement.

As far as i'm aware they were all Brass... I've had a fair few...

I guess it's possibly a replacement... but you can't say for 100% sure
oldstuff

Very nice, Chris. I remember when you won that one! Beautiful clean up job.
I love those first run adventures, don't you?

Thanks, MJ, the lever arm is definately brass with a black rubber cover (original?) over it.

I never thought about it like that, but your right as it fits in better with the original paint work.

A few marks aren't a problem its a great looking engine and better for it - give it some historical provenance. Are you going to run it?

Already have, both before and after the restoration to check the dezincafication areas for leaks. Unfortunately haven't got a video camera or broadband yet so can't do a vid, when things change I'll do one.

Cheers
