flatbase minor 2 cleanup

It's already some time ago that I bought my flatbase minor 2. Today I finaly made some progress with cleaning it up.

when I got it, It looked like this:

I decided to keep this engine 100% original, so no repainting was required. The paintwork was looking a bit dull, so I searched for something to polish it. I found a can of "Commandant 5" car polish, and gave it a trie.
It worked very well, after a few minites of polishing, the paint was looking a lot better.

I think however that you shouldn't do this too often, because my towel turned orange.

It's not yet finished, but it now looks like this:

Some small parts like the cylinder, piston and shaft are goint into the vinegar and salt for the night.

We look forward to the end result Erik!

Nor me
erikl

pic should work now.

The picture is not looking very good yet, the flash of my camera made it look worse than it is now. The paint is realy shiney.
I'll try to make a better pic tommorow, with daylight.
Mamodman123

Does look good Erik!

You've made the right decision to keep it original anyway

That brass flywheel will polish up a treat
erikl

the brass flywheel is looking realy shiney now Took me a hour to get it clean, but it was woth the work.

Takes me about an hour to polish the wheels, might be slow but it doesn't half work and look good!
Wallace

Only 2 pics working for me at the mo. Before and one of it with flywheel off.

Looking good though Erik. Real good.

That's the problem with polishing, it always takes paint. Well with a car polish anyway.

Porbably worth doing once for a clean up, then linseed oil it.

T-cut does, its meant to take a layer off faded paint!

Haven't heard of this Fellas, how much salt? How much vinegar? How long do I soak the parts for?

Get a mug, fill the mug with vinegar as much as you need to fuly soak the parts. You can buy a massive bottle of vinegar from the co-op for 89p . Put a LOT of salt in till the vinegar turns light brown, then leave in for about an hour and it does the trick!

Happy days. Does this only work on brass? If I do my SR1 boiler, does it matter if any of the mix gets inside?

Well it could potentially ruin the threads so don't let the threads soak in the vinegar its ok if it touches it though just not soaking for a long period of time.

Thanks MM. I'll have the house stinking of vinegar this very night.

Yes there is Tmuir! very rewarding at the end once you have polished it all up

One of MM's arms must be huge with muscles due to all the polishing he does

not really MTA, you just have to scrub through the pain barrier then it's plain sailing towards the end

Does ache a bit though..

polishing Polar Bear's dome at Amberley takes it out of you She's prone to priming, so we always cover the paintwork and dome for the first few runs with a cloth

You would have to buy a few bottles of brasso for that

The steam dome on my loco's go dull after about 2 mins
MTA

My one has turned black, and wont come off I will give it a good going over this week

Just be careful you don't start to rub the paint away around the boiler when polishing

How did i know that MTA? I did it on Rosa a while back
MTA

Mine unscrews and reveals the steam pipe and spring, whats the Mamod arrangement? Back to Polar Bear's dome, if you have something that big to polish, pour brasso over it, rather than on a rag, and then use the rag to polish it

The flywheel indeed turned out nice. It was quite dirty, and looked like it had some kind of gold paint on it, but it came off easily. Great thing is that the flywheels on my bowman have the same thing, so now I know I cam probably gat those nice and shiny too

I'm a bit less happy with that scorching. It was everyday begging me to paint it, but I resisted
MTA

I must admit the brass flywheeled engines look nicer polished. I must add one to my miniscule stationary collection (which consists of one!)

Yes, but I've found the spring to do absolutly nothing and took both off mine!

You had better not repaint that Erik or i'm on the next plane

My MM1 doesnt have scorching, just a couple of bare metal patches, that'll do me
erikl

don't worry, It's finished now, no repaint required

Good! have you got any more plans for engines Erik buying that is? haven't spoken for quite a while
erikl

I have no plans for buying engines now (I want to buy a car first now) but I have two engines that need work.

I have that realy rough looking SE3 G&G that needs a lot of work, and I have the bowman m122 that needs a good clean-up, so I got enought to do still.
MTA

two big engines to keep you occupied We all have to stop collecting at some point erikl

I'm not stopping, just taking a pause in buying new engines
At the moment I'm also looking for a place to rent, to move out of my parents house, so I've quite some things that eat up my money.
But if anything special pops up on ebay... you never know.
