Flying Scotsman in OZ, 1988

I'd like to say that seeing this Loco in OZ, back when I was 12, started me on steam.

But it didn't. All I remember is Dad filiming it up and down the NSW coast, and having that feeling "this is boring"

Probably coupled with "can we go home, when are we going home"

If only I could see it now

The following pics were taken at a town called paterson. The ride went from Maitland, to Paterson (no idea how long, 30mins?) and back. These pics were taken at the turnaround (I'm sure there is a term for that)

It was coulped with a OZ engine, the 3801. I did go on it, but sadly back then, well as above "can we go yet"

The one chance in my life, and I couldn't care about it. Yes I'm kicking myself for seeing it that way

Graham-Jilly

and followed by are we there yet

I would hate to guess mate
more than Ill see in a lifetime I sure
Steve_S

Great pictures Wallace. 4472 must be the most photographed loco in the world, and the most widely travelled too. (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong!)
IndianaRog

Wallace, those were awesome photos. Though I have heard of the engine countless times and probably saw a pic or two, it is nice to see some quality photos up close and personal.

Dumb question, but did they just load that on a ship and haul it to OZ for publicity runs??? Just getting it on and off a ship would be something to see. Imagine that engine dangling from a crane!!!

I have see such a photo! Alas, I cannot remember where, and can't find it online.

So "The Scotsman" was in Oz in 1988.
That explains why there were no photos of her side by side with "Mallard", which was celibrating the 50th aniversary of its record-breaking run in 1988, with a pack of railtours all over the UK.
I wanted to go on one of the railtours soooo badly, but the prices were extortionate! (especially for a 14yr old lad).

I did get the video though!

Cheers, Nick

I have a book somewhere in my 'pit' aka bedroom with loads of pictures detailing 4472's service from the time it was built until 199?. It has quite a few pictures of 4472 in the USA and Oz, along with some details If I find it, I'll post up some details if anyone wants them

i have a video of when the flying scotman went to austrialia
Wallace

Cheers for all the comments.

Yeah I've seen pics or a video of it from a crane, when it came to OZ.

Steve, I agree, seems to be very much photgraphed. To me, it, and the 3801 (the oz engines) are the 2 most well known here.

Rog, well yeah was shipped to OZ. I'd have to see the video again, but I have a feeling it wasn't brought here totally complete. I am probably wrong, but I recall it did have parts taken off it for the trip, but don't know why.
1988 Was Australia's Bicentennary. 200years since it was settled.
I think one of the ultimate photos of it here, would be of it crossing the Sydney harbour bridge, which it did do.
The pics scanned well. For reasons unknown to me, they were standard 6x4" photos, I scanned for original size, then they came out massive. Had to resize for here

V8nick. Suprisingly the cost here was pretty good.

James, your old mans mate was a fireman on that tour? That would have been great. I have 2 pics I didn't scan of some oldmates in the cab. I'll have tod do them, to see if one was him.

MTA, thanks a lot for the tour dates. That tells me the above pics would have actuaky been in 1989. As Maitland has steamfest in April.

Lewis, that might be the same video my old man has
Wallace

MTA, just looking at those tour dates. Our Bicentennary was celebrated on Australia Day. 26th Jan, 1988.
Looks like the flying scotsman got here a month later. I wonder if it got delayed in the trip, as I would have thought it would be here for the celebrations

Just flicked through the book again, it actually says about the Australian bicentennary:

"In 1988, the celebration of Australia's Bi-Centennial Year brought together a group of like-minded people who were convinced that a railway display should form a principal part of the celebrations, because of the importance of the 'iron road' in the development of Australia as a nation."

So you got it in one there Wallace, although the shipping wasn't late. The owner of 4472 at the time, Bill McAlpine, demanded that he would only send it to Oz if "cast-iron financial guarantees had been received about funding and for transporting the locomotive to the other side of the world and back". 4472 had an overhaul between 27 February 1988 and 14 August 1988. Then 4472 undertook running in turns and a couple of mainline tours, before being shipped to Oz on the 11th September 1988

Worst thing is the dam thing came home. I know when she was shipped to America she went out of Liverpool.

On the return from (I think) Oz she was welded to the ships deck. Shame the dam thing didnt sink.
steamyman

wonderful pics Wallace!

It (4472) came my way in Easter 1989. The only way I knew about it was on the news.

I wasn't interested in trains in '89 that much, as I am now.
steamyman

btw- 1 of it's drivers ,now lives in Oz.
Wallace

Lewis I think it is a double cassette. I'll check it out when I'm over there next.

Over hyped pile of junk if you ask me. Im not a GWR fan they only ever built 3 locos proerly and they are narrow guage but everyone knows 3440 was the 1st loco to do 100mph so why all the fuss about some green thing that has cost millions more than anything else and sent a few of its owners bankrupt. Plus the fact that the NRM spent far to much on it. Money that could be better spent on other locos.

So very true Of course, 3440's 'ton' was never officially recorded I find it stupid how 4472 is in LNER livery with the german style smoke deflectors. She only carried them in BR livery!
SillyBilly

I find it stupid that everyone makes a fuss over it! Where as we have some querky unique locos that no one's interested. 4472 is over rated, ok, it looks nice and I'll by some memrobilia, but it's nt worth £2.3M, IMHO!

the real steam engine heroes where the heavy haullers such as the garratts and 9fs the ones that kept the wheels of industry turning without them everything would have ground to a standstill

dont get me round all british steam is the best but in my opinion the frieght engines where the best such a shame they got rid of some of the best engines

Spot on Lewis in my eyes Id rather have a J94 anyday. at least on the subject of garratts the Welsh Highland have got the original back in action. Other thing that realy anoys me is the way the NRM acted over the Class 56. Oh its just a diesel we dont want it was the basic attitude look at the work theyve put in over the last 25years, kept many a power station and therefore the country going.
MTA

Not to sure about the NRM TBH. A friend of mine (Anthony Coulls, Head of Collections at NRM Shildon) was most helpful in asking about if the LSWR M7 drawings they have were accessible. Although when I contacted the NRM via the main site, I got a very blunt reply saying "No, you can't have them"
James

I know nowt about trains but I'll sum up what I do know in this sentence:

Flying Scotsman and Mallard are reet nice locos, the rest are shit.
SillyBilly

No, your only saying that from a non-enthusiast point of view, and therefore they are britans most famous locos. They are shit, you want to like somthing diffrent which is impressive and has bags of history.

Yep that proved your point. Mallard I have respect for. If you realy want a proper passenger loco that is worth having a Duchess is the way forward. Says somthing when they could never test how powerful they were as the fireman couldnt keep up with it.
James

Mallard is blue though Blue is niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

Right, I've been a big fan of the Gresley Pacifics for many years, and though I'm pleased that 4472 is the most famous loco in the world, I don't really understand why ???
But to say that it isn't deserving of spending the money on it to a bit harsh, as she is the last of her class (that alone should justify the expenditure). Whereas the GWR are very well represented on the preserved lines, thanks in no small part to Dai Woodham.

Cheers, Nick
