Several people had suggested my Mamod triple could use another, or a heavier flywheel.
Last Friday afternoon, I decided to find out.......
I`ve had a few P/bkt vid upload problems.........
But, this has been viewed 9 times before I`ve posted it!

"Who needs a flywheel?" indeed.
It does look great though.
Does the engine always self start now it's got the third cylinder? I notice that it did a few times on your video.
Do you have any more plans for it?
Wallace
Great video
I certainly don't see a need for a 2nd flywheel.
Nice runner that one

Thanks for your comment, Wallace.
It is self starting, 95% of the time.
Future plans?
Ah! Well. Hmmm. Errrrr.......
Yes.......

I think the general rule of thumb is: the more cylinders, the less you need a flywheel.
As I see it, the flywheel is there to keep the crank turning between power strokes. With the configuration you have in that engine, it's almost always on a power stroke.

Excellent experiment and a real eye opener.
Smart thinking mate.

Thanks Sandy!
I get much pleasure from the new camera, & vids I take at the time.
I took a dozen or so.......
If no-one`s bored yet, here`s a couple more.......

Very interesting, I wonder if there would be a difference if the engine was under load, as the flywheel will store some enertia
MooseMan
I could watch that all day....great videos, beautiful engine.

That is thinking outside of the box, quite an original thought.
I doubt that a single cylinder would run well without one. I believe that the power stroke of an opposing piston makes up for the flywheel which is to create momentum. I like the video, the engine, and the thinking.
James
That's bloody brilliant!
Great video and commentry
I want one
Lewis
Excellent stuff mate Really does sound nice as well
Video quality is good as well mate
if you ever did need a heavier flywheel you would need an sp5 one mate as its the biggest mamod make
See your protecting those fingers as well

I think its brilliant, and question why Mamod never took the plunge

Wonderful job- I love the narration... thanks for sharing---
I assume flywheels are need to store potential energy when belts transfer power to work loads.........

I guess I need something to drive!
Another engine?
Little SEL......... Or D20?
I`ve got dental floss!
Hmmmm.........

Ha ha!
Viewed this thread and your videos an hour ago and left comment on the main video.
