Forum First, A Renown Roller under steam!

Ok its up on blocks and not running on the floor as the original burner has problems and I need to build a new one before I can make it mobile but this test proves my drive system works.

First the still photos.

Still got Mamod rear wheels but now have the drive pulley, The original rubbers are lost and would not fit anyways but I just slid some silicon fuel line over the drive rod and as it was a fraction of a mm too small then wrapped two layers of insulation tape around it.
Use a Mamod sprung cord.

Now you need to use a small amount of pressure to hold the drive rod onto the wheels and for this I gutted an old 3 1/2 floppy drive I had lying around for the spring and it worked a treat.

Now onto the video. Enjoy

I plan to make a new burner over the next week or two.
Les

That's really nice, I am surprised at how quiet it is, and roughly how long had it been sitting around?
johnreid

Bringing them back from the dead, great work and a great place to to do it too.
Mamodman123

Nice runner Tony
Sandman

You've proved that there's life in the old girl yet Tony.

Great to see mate.
Steve_S

That's great! Looks like it'll be a strong runner on the floor when the time comes.
TRAPPERKEEPER

Excellent! I wonder about how fast these go compared to the Mamod rollers
duncandumpertruck

A cracker! I like the real agricultural look that it sports. How much vertical movement is in the rear axle grooves? I see you have a spring in there for tension, can you adjust the diameter of the friction drive easily enough for speed control? Quiet too!
mc_mc

Nice to see the workshop getting used.  I need to get a heater for mine as it's too cold out there.  You probably have the opposite problem
IndianaRog

Nice Tony, runs very smooth and quiet.  Certainly a forum first!!
steamgranny

Congratulations, Tony
bessytractor

I like that Tony, it sounds great and runs at a good scale speed apparently.  Whens the first mobile run?
tmuir

Thanks everyone, I'll try and answer everyones questions.
The roller was made some time between 1948 and 1958 and would say it has been atleast 30 years since it was last run, probably longer.

The rear wheels are not the original wheels but Mamod ones and are slightly larger diameter than the original wheels.

The rubber wheel that would of been on it originally would of been considerably larger probably around 15mm in diameter so it was made to run faster.
I don't have much movement at all on the rear axle so can't lower to to put a bigger friction wheel on to increase the speed but I am hoping one day to get better wheels for it and can adjust it then.

Have a look here on the bottom of the page in this link to see what the original wheels and friction drive should look like.

I need to have my lathe before I can make the new burner as I will need to make and overflow plug and bush for the burner but may start work and the sheet metal part before I get my lathe but I don't expect to have it running on te ground for a couple of weeks.
Nick

It runs great! You didn't waste any time getting to that project.

I can see a few projects in the background waiting their turn.
Wallace

Great stuff Tony.

Runs well
Manxman

Oh Tony, I'm green, very green. That is great and coming along very nicely. New burner and wheels, agree a price and then sell it to me Got to be a great idea.

Excellent and very rare mobile being brought back to life.
tmuir

Oh if I could only find a second one Chris.
xlchainsaw

thanks for that tony. i checked the link you posted and checked the rear wheels. this would be a simple casting. if you can make a pattern (a wooden wheel ) there shouldnt be a problem with getting one cast. you will need to make the pattern slightly bigger to allow for shrinkage. ill donate my old alu.frying pan for the pot four wheels (patterns) would be good for the pour as to allow for a bad cast. the same for the front rollers.perhaps make a few extra. try and sell them on ebay . if some one bids it may lead to other rollers. ect.
tmuir

Thats I'll keep that in mind if I cant get them made locally.
One of my longer term goals is to build a small gas fired furnace to cast ali and maybe brass so I can do my own casting but have lots of other things to sort out first.
Manxman

I've always figured a pair of Wells wheels would be ok. They are cast in the same way and although not an exact copy, they are a lot closer match than those Mamod ones.
Cranko

Looks good Tony

I've got a set and I think I checked and they were too big.
But as I will be getting my lathe tomorrow I will probably go back and check that again.

Spent a bit of time today and made a new burner for my Renown.

Notice how the bottom has been shaped so the wick pipe sits lower down than the rest of the tank so as to use all the meths.
This is copied off the original, the wick pipe only goes into the tank about 15mm but the grooves runs for 90% of the tank length to help the meths get into the wick tube.
I made this by using a 6mm diameter round router bit to route a channel into two bits of wood.
Sat some silver steel of the correct diameter into the bottom channel, put the brass sheet over it then the top bit of wood with the channel lined up over the top and clamped them together. Not perfect but good enough.
The wick tubes were salvaged from the original burner.
Here it is in place.

Now I still haven't got my camera back so this is my back up camera which has no sound on it but its better than nothing.
The roller still needs some more tweaking and maybe a new piston but its getting there.

pauly

thats great I really want 1
nice scale speed but doesnt seem to reliable
tmuir

No it still needs a bit more work yet, but it will get there.
But its progressed alot from when I got it of not running for probably over 20 years or more and half of it missing.
I've still got some friction I need to get rid of but thats enough for tonight.
Les

Well done, it was great to see it moving and it can only get better from now on.
johnreid

I doubt there are many alive that have enjoyed watching one roll under its own power, great job.
IndianaRog

Cool to see Tony.  I noticed how you spun one of two flywheels to get it started...will it reverse by just spinning the opposite direction?
steamyman

yay! that's so cool Tony!

No it is a forward running roller only.
Its just a simply oscilator and the two pulley provide the gearing down for slow running although it should move faster than it is but due to the Mamod wheels being larger diameter than the original wheels the direct drive rubber is considerabe smaller on mine so it runs slower.
Wallace

Great work Tony
